Local visits and farm news from Brandon weekend

M P Scott visited Brandon with friends over the weekend. Mr and Mrs A Gurr hosted relatives for James Gurrs 22nd birthday on Friday night. Ten days of unusual snow disrupted rail and road traffic in England. Alfred enjoyed skating as frosty conditions continued. A good season is reported with a second berry crop and a wheat crop priced at 45 a quarter or $1.35 per bushel in Canada. The Stantons look forward to the Herald and follow district happenings.

Suprise Party Fete For Bride Elect Miss Cunningham

A group of Miss Betty Cunningham’s friends hosted a Friday night surprise at Mrs. Kelly’s home then moved to the Cunningham residence. They sang old tunes and presented a boat loaded with gifts such as needlework, cutlery and chinaware to the bride elect. Mrs. R. Rollins read a wedding well wishing address. Miss Cunningham thanked the crowd.

Meeting at Arrow River advances restricted area plan

Last May a meeting at Arrow River discussed forming a Restricted Area to eradicate bovine tuberculosis. Dr Munn spoke as farmers and councillors endorsed the scheme with near unanimous petition support. Petitions were sent to the Department, with progress expected as districts are added to form the area.

Education Week runs Sunday February 5th to Friday February 10th with the theme The Old and New in Education. The program aims to explain current educational theories and trends and to acquaint the public with services of the present system and the challenges it faces. Teachers stress understanding of today’s system to prepare future citizens for democracy.

Miniota Update Report from Fifteen Years Ago

Fifteen years ago leap year marked a census with Miniota population at 278. The funeral of Alex H. Rollo was held at Beulah. Lloyd Wiggins won a lottery ticket for W. Hurlin's car. Miniota drew police visits drawing local attention. Ven Archdeacon Thomas led services at Anglican churches in the district. Miniota sent representatives to the Brandon spiel: A. Kerr J. R. Lynch R. Peel W. L. Hodnett.

Justice orders non-suit in injunction over insurance merger

Justice Adamson grants non-suit in an injunction application to restrain Miniota Farmers Mutual Insurance Company from amalgamating with Wawanesa Company. M G Doyle filed the application for the eight to ten thousand shareholders. An appeal was filed against the order.
