Miniota Council Studies Roads and Tax Sale Plans

The R M of Miniota Council met February 6 1961 at the Municipal Hall with all members present Reeve Hyndman presiding Minutes of January 11 were adopted Officials letters discussed roadwork acts senior housing and other matters A delegation from Archie and a Highway staff attended to talk roads A plan classification was set and by law 1048 passed The council outlined tax arrears notices sale on April 29 1961 and authorized purchase of tax sale certificates A road cost study to connect McAuley Birdtail and Beulah Isabella roads was requested The group also opposed extending Barber and Hairdresser Acts province wide and ordered tax payments and adjournment to March 6 1961

Family Night Showcased by Miniota 4-H Groups

Miniota Consumers Co operative hosted a Family Night at the Community Centre with eight 4-H groups presenting ten minute programs. Acts included singing, vocal duets, solos, a skit, a Sailor's Hornpipe, a monologue, and dancing with piano and guitar accompaniment. Chris Thorsteinson MC’d and entertained on organ. Gordon Long distributed club cheques. coffee and doughnuts served.

Minota School Board Meets in Municipal Hall February 10 1961

The Minota Board met at Municipal Hall on February 10 1961 with most members present. New Ward 3 and 5 trustees took seats, various transportation and curriculum items were approved, school holidays set, and insurance and payroll matters discussed.

The W A W M S met in the schoolroom of the Miniota church on February 15 with 14 present. Mrs A McKean and Mrs W E McDonald led worship. L Reynolds and G Reynolds presented New Ways of Speaking about literacy programs in Africa Burma and the Philippines. A film Village Reborn showed lit lit program in action. Plans were made for an Irish Supper on March 17. Twenty one pairs of mitts were sent to needy Indians in the north. Members were urged to aid the Mission Band with used postage stamps and Christmas cards. Mrs A McKean is making a travelling apron as a fund raiser for GBA. Mrs G Reynolds and Mrs O L Patterson hosted tea.

Pension Act boosts veterans' pensions on parliament Hill

Parliament Hill report notes a 20 percent basic increase in pensions for disabled veterans under the Pension Act, affecting about 155000 pensioners and 31700 widows and dependents at a 31 million dollar cost. Debate included study into the War Veteran Allowance Act and immigration policy discussion.

Miniota WI Holds Meeting On Hidden Persuaders

A Canadian Association of Consumers panel on Hidden Persuaders highlighted a Friday meeting at the Community Centre. Members discussed mass psychology in advertising, urged recognition of techniques, and planned reflex against manipulation amid library, Red Cross, and Hospital Aid activities.

Variety Concert at Miniota High School Highlights Evening

Miniota High School staged a Variety Program in the school auditorium. Despite poor weather the turnout was good as the acoustics worked well. Principal H. Kingdon chaired. Jack Spalding conveyed Student Council greetings. The program featured a Speech Choir reading The Creation, a drama with Garry Johnson and others, a comedy with John Mitchell and teammates, and musical numbers by Faye Leland, Vicky Leland, and others. Proceeds fund a new school piano.

World Day of Prayer Observed at Holy Trinity Church

The Women's World Day of Prayer was held Friday afternoon at Holy Trinity church with women from both congregations assisting. Mrs. A Armitage spoke on Forward Through The Ages in Unbroken Line as US initiated the observance in 1887, later moving to Canada then worldwide.
