Touchwood Hills and Touchwood Trail shaping Saskatchewan settlement
Before railways connected the Northwest to Eastern Canada few settlements existed in present Saskatchewan. The 1882 Canadian Pacific Railway spurred migration from Ontario and Europe, with the Touchwood Hills becoming a central trading stop along the Carlton Trail. Early settlers arrived 1880–83, Round Plain joined by Wishart, schools and a union church formed, while Fort Qu’Appelle and Kutawa supplied goods. Today the Stone Church and Touchwood Fort remain as historical monuments.
