Dugout water supply considerations and safety
Adequate water can be secured from a dugout but needs a 60 acre drainage to fill annually. Use non porous soil, avoid clay and gravel layers, bore to a few feet below bottom to test site. Keep drainage clean, fence water access, and pump livestock water away. Do not plant trees within 200 feet. Control algae with copper sulphate but avoid overdose. Filter dugout water through sand or gravel and maintain a clean box filter with a pipe to a well. Test water regularly for safety.
