Hemp twine industry starts in Manitoba at Portage la Prairie

Western Canada welcomes a hemp based cordage industry as Manitoba's Portage la Prairie plant ships medium and heavy twines to provincial points. With 30 workers and 290000 in capital, the venture grows hemp locally after trials by Manitoba Agricultural College and Canadian Pacific Railway. Crops yielded 2.5 tons per acre in 6 to 10 foot stands, and farmers earned about 50 dollars per acre. The plant plans expansion and aims to reduce Canada’s reliance on imports.
