Weaning weight is 30 percent heritable. selecting bulls and replacement heifers with heavy weaning weights improves mothering ability and calf growth. Top one third cows wean heavier calves than bottom one third. seven months age shows about 140 pounds difference. Growth rate is 45 percent heritable and highly responsive to selection. ROP tests show top third calves gain about two-thirds of a pound per day more than bottom third, equating to over 100 pounds in 168 days and over 200 pounds by one year.
