To achieve a smooth final coat the varnish must be sanded and rubbed after drying. The last coat is treated with No 00 steel wool or pumice, then with rotten stone and oil or water, cleaned thoroughly to avoid scratches. A fine polish may be made by mixing shellac with raw linseed oil and applying briskly on a wool cloth.
Recent experiments indicate sea water around Ireland is unusually rich in radium. Extended measurements include waters from between Madeira and England and from the Arabian sea.
