The Glenwood Woman's Club begins its year with a program featuring reports from three delegates to the National Federation of Women's Clubs in San Francisco Mrs William Skillcorn Mrs M J Williams and Mrs O B E Dean. Officers announced include President Mrs William Skillcorn Vice President Mrs G W Jones Recording Secretary Mrs W Bathke Corresponding Secretary Mrs M McCluskey and Treasurer Mrs I B L Hester. Public meetings are open to all by small dues. nonmembers may join department dues to attend department programs. The Trane class meets September 28 to discuss Scotland and Robert Burns. Shakespeare class meeting October 8 covers Act I of Macbeth. Enthusiasm grows for the year ahead.
Glenwood's first practice draws fifteen hopeful players with Harold Graves again captain. Thirty students join the Athletic Association. only Graves and Vance Brooks remain as veterans. Enthusiasm runs high among underclassmen as coach Graves forecasts a fast light squad and a growing season. First game targeted for last Saturday of the month with plans for Missouri Valley and Creston games.
Henry Dean defeated Dr. Pearson on the Hillside courts to win the singles championship in the Glenwood city tournament. The final was a brisk, scientific match watched by a fair crowd, with Dean taking games 6-1 6-3 6-1 after three weeks of competition among ten top Hillside players.
This week’s consolation matches saw Vinton defeat Olson as doubles play starts. Glenwood institutions enter two teams while Hillside boosters anticipate a larger next year. Southwestern Iowa tournament next summer aims to raise Glenwood high’s status. a new clubhouse to be moved post Vine street paving with showers, lockers and veranda. Mills County autumn tournament planned around October 10-11 during veterans reunion, inviting clubs for singles and doubles with prizes. Match scores show Dean and Pearson strong with faults, points, and aces detailed.
