He Led Them From Libby Prison Escape Tale of General Rose
Thomas E. Rose, brevet brigadier general, died in Washington on December 18. He led a 15 man Libby prison escape team in 1864, digging a 70 foot tunnel with improvised tools, rope, and a coal chute spindle, surfacing with a rope ladder and a perilous vented shaft. Seventeen days of silent labor yielded a successful breakout, 109 prisoners missing the next roll call, with 59 reaching Union lines, 48 recaptured, two drowned. Rose was later exchanged.
