Fire destroys historic Central University building at Pella
An 1855 brick structure at the Central University site in Pella, Marion county, burned recently. The building, once the core of Iowa's first western college, stood near Des Moines river woodland and served Baptist roots before ownership shifted to Dutch Reformed. The fire erased a marble list of Civil War names, while the campus evolves with new facilities and a growing educational mission.
