Process for Army Worm Breeding Control in Alfalfa

Army worm activity is rising as mature larvae enter pupal stage. Pupae are reddish brown, about five-eighths inch, without legs or wings, found just beneath the soil or in small surface holes. In 10 to 15 days pupae become adults and lay eggs for the next generation. Destroying pupae now by scraping or covering cells reduces future worm outbreaks. Pigs and chickens can help pick up pupae, and exposing or removing pupal cells on the surface helps prevent moth emergence. Careful disturbance of alfalfa fields may risk young plants but benefits outweigh risks if stems are not at sharp angles.
