Iowa Land Boom Shows Limited Returns for Farmers
A federal survey reports Iowa land values rose 32 percent in 1919 with a statewide average of 63 dollars per acre across the nation. Most farms did not sell above four hundred dollars an acre, and less than 10 percent changed hands during the boom. Farmers constituted 66 percent of buyers, while towns and cities claimed about two thirds of the value increases on resold properties. Only exceptional farmers could net more than 3 percent on capitalization, limiting tenant buyers.
