Mills County Faces Possible Suit Over School Funds Interest
Mills County may be sued by the State of Iowa over the handling of state school funds invested for several years. The county charged 4 percent interest to the state while lending the money to local farmers at 5 percent, netting about $400 annually. A foreclosure case in Lyons township resulted in $350 proceeds, with $115 charged back for costs, which the state auditor refuses to allow, saying the state should claim the entire sale proceeds. The county contends it should keep profits after repaying principal and interest to the state. The Board instructed the auditor to uphold the charge.
