Causes of Strikes and Wages in Mining Industry

Byron W. Holt argues in June address by UMWA President John Mitchell that high trust prices and tariff policies depress miners’ real wages. He cites Dun's index and Sauerteck tables to compare living costs, noting 1900s wage levels under 300 dollars annually and 10 percent raises largely offset by higher living costs and rebates. He warns free trade in trust goods would hurt workers and spur wage gains through labor agitation.
