Wrinkled Meat John Smith Dies at 137 in Minnesota
The Pioneer Press reports Ga Be Nah Gwai Wone known as John Smith, Minnesota’s oldest citizen, died Tuesday February 7 at Cass Lake aged 137. He survived pneumonia after a week, died at the home of his adopted son Tom Smith, famed for resisting beds and other comforts of civilization. Age has long been debated. researchers cite 137 years per various records and agencies.

Wrinkled Meat Era Chippewa Chief of Minnesota Dies
Wrinkled Meat, a Chippewa warrior born about 1785 near Pokegama Minnesota, lived largely near Cass Lake and Cass Lake area. He joined the Catholic church, never slept in a bed, boasted of five slain Sioux and wore five eagle feathers for them. He recalled the 1883 meteor shower, 1917 accident, and claimed to have played for Wisconsin in 1812. He died after a long life marked by stubborn independence and memory of tribal history.
