State Capitol Letter to Meet Iowa Treasury Shortage

George Callarno reports from Des Moines that the 37th Iowa General Assembly faces a looming deficit of over one million dollars when the new biennial period begins July 1. Receipts through June 30 total about 4.24 million against 5.72 million in authorized expenditures, with about 183 thousand expected to revert to the treasury. Legislative leaders blame prior assemblies for the mess and warn a new tax levy may be needed, while education and normal school funding loom large in the deficit.
