Local notes list many visitors and residents returning for Christmas from Omaha Council Bluffs Kansas City and other towns. Workmen and students travel for holidays while box socials and dances bring community cheer.
A large Glenwood High School audience heard students compete in three oratorical contests at the Congregational church. Judges included Supt. Rouse, Prof. Lane, and Dr. Plimpton. Prizes offered were 15 in each class for oratorical humorous and dramatic. First place went to Stanley Curtis, with Collier Billington second and Marion Lutz third. Other speakers were Leon Ward, Paul Gilliland and Dale Skiles. Mary Blair won humorous, Zada Ostrander second, Will Allbee third. Pearl Kiddoo led dramatic, Anna Anderson second, Stella Carter third.
Holiday plans list Supt Mays and family and Ide Goodell plus Eben Jackson Estella Smith and Grace Aitkin Carroll White Mabel Will Glenly Wilson Susan Jewell Mabel Smith and Carrie Cook among others as they depart from Glenwood for vacations to several towns including Red Oak Shenandoah Clarinda Tipton Grinnell and Sidney with destinations noted.
Caught a big wolf by Hodges north of Glenwood and wired a bounty of 5 dollars. Glenwood Cookery book edited by the Woman's Guild of the M. E. church for sale at multiple stores for 50 cents, 138 pages of tested recipes. O J Lincoln & Co buys W N Bullington feed store and keeps cash basis sales. Terry & Norman urge immediate settlements of accounts. For Sale 37 acres in Center township at 40 dollars per acre. Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea advertised with 35 cent price.
The Baptist Sunday school held Ximas exercises at the church with piano solos by Etta Van Kirk and Caisis Plumer. The Methodist Sunday school presented a Xmas cantata at the opera house Saturday night. Silver City girls lost to Malvern 13 to 8. Several residents visit family and travel for Xmas including Miss Van Kirk, Miss Goos, and Miss Flanagan. A horse frightened the train crew near Xmas travel. minor injuries reported. Rev Moser begins special meetings at East Liberty. Others visit Cedar Falls, Oakland, and South Dakota, with local social events and entertainment noted.
The W BR C and Workmen lodge announce installation of officers on Saturday evening January 6 with Ettie Stranathan as installing officer. Officers listed include Ella Hollinger president and Peter Larson foreman. An advert promotes Hall's Catarrh Cure as a constitutional remedy by F. J. Cheney & Co of Toledo, with a $100 pledge if it fails to cure, and notes Yuko Hall's Family Pills for constipation.
Overaimed in the Glenwood post office Dec. 27, 1903. Names Jahn Abbott and Wilbur Compheony associated with advertised letters. Tribune office offers new visiting card styles at 50 for 400. Read the twice-weekly Tribune for Mills county news.
