Lincoln era yarns told of humor and duels in Illinois

Captain Lewis Ijams told 1000 stories over 302 weeks to Abram Brokaw, the famous Illinois pioneer. The Blooming ton court compensated him about 5 per story for recounting tales about early Illinois agriculture and Lincoln era figures. A standout highway tale involved Jacob Spawr and a jury oath delivered with a box and a warder inside. Also recounted were wolf hunting yarns, and Lincoln and Douglas dueling bravado, with Shields and Todd episodes that led to a famous duel scare that ended in friendship.
