Allotropic Form of Aluminum Evades Oxidation Claim
Report from France describes a curious aluminum form that volatilizes under vacuum heat. At 1100 C about 60 percent is lost in 73 hours, and at 1200 C the entire sample volatilizes in 80 hours. A portion remains less volatile, and distillation yields a residue more prone to oxygen binding, rapidly turning to a gray alumina-aluminum mix. Analyses show low iron and silicon impurities, suggesting the oxidizable metal is an allotropic aluminum form.
