A fire at a Canal street factory in Philadelphia caused a $150,000 loss to stock and machinery in two firms run by Alexander McConnell and his son John J. McConnell. About 159 workers were affected, with $75,000 to $100,000 insured on the property. The blaze began on the third floor around 4 a.m. and three alarms were raised before the walls failed.
