A German study estimates 1877 saw over 4 billion letters sent worldwide, averaging 11 million daily and 127 per second. Europe led with 3.036 billion, followed by America 760 million, Asia 150 million, Africa 25 million, and Australia 50 million. Telegraphs reached about 38,000 stations with 110 to 111 million messages that year, about 306,000 daily, 12,671 hourly, and 212 per minute.
