The 1870 Washington Treasury Note Theft Exposed

A Washington incident in 1870 details the theft of 2000 ten dollar notes from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. A couple, aided by a confederate, distracted officials while the thief hid the package in a Panama hat. Despite telegraph and Secret Service efforts, the thieves vanished with the loot and were never caught. The event coincided with a political wedding and a dramatic party where news of a presidential setback dampened celebrations.
