Smallpox Alarm Ripples Through South Bethlehem
The South Bethlehem smallpox scare continues with about 120 cases in a town of four thousand. Lehigh University allows students to depart, Bishopthorpe school may close, and several houses are quarantined while authorities guard confluent cases. Vaccination efforts show signs of containment as deaths rise with eight years hard labor sentence for a military case.

Court finds defendant not guilty in libel case at Union County
The court directed a not guilty verdict due to insufficient proof of publication. Jurors later issued a joint statement defending Rev. Peter C. Weidemyer’s character and clearing him of improper conduct at the Weisley’s Camp meeting in 1878. Also notes Guiteau’s autograph business and remarks on Garfield Arthur era politics.
