Destructive Freight Wreck Near Summitville on Cleveland and Pittsburg Line
An east bound freight train on the Cleveland and Pittsburg railroad collided after a coupling mishap near Summitville, 70 miles from Pittsburgh. The crash caused cars to derail and catch fire, destroying sixteen freight cars and a caboose while crews escaped uninjured. A single car loaded with hides survived the blaze.

Death near Lenhartsville from cold after fall
Polly Stump age about fifty five was found dead near the Schuylkill and Lehigh Rail road at Lenhartsville while walking home from the village store. She fell through a bridge breaking her leg and after crawling about two hundred yards exhausted and with lacerated hands laid down as the temperature stood ten degrees above zero and died before morning. A jury ruled death due to cold and exposure following the fall.
