A poetic journey describes sharp spires against a sunset, likened to ship masts in a sea of flame. A lone pilgrim traces a ground path through orchards and meadows toward a hill town, crossing realms of youth and age toward an afterlife light beyond death.
In a night crisis aboard the merchant ship Druid bound from Bom bay to London, Lieutenant Winfield leaps from the mizzen yard to save Bell Upton from a Hindu attacker. He drops onto the railed side, kills the assailant, and saves the vessel before an offshore breeze renews course home, where Winfield marries Bell.
A 40 year old tale describes making a ten inch circular disk from sheet iron mounted on a wooden mandrel. The disk, spun at high speed, cut soft sheet iron and then hardened steel, enabling it to gum saws of various sizes for many years.
Narrator recalls a Kingston deer hunt with Daniel Webster at Marshfield and companions. The party chased two deer in Watson's valley, with Webster and friend shooting the buck and the narrator’s party taking a doe. A red fox was found later, and the group returned home jingling belts as a sign of success.

A vivid account recalls Tecumseh in 1818 halting Indian prisoners' execution during Col. Dudley's relief attempt at Fort Meigs. The scene features Tecumseh leaping from his horse, restraining two chiefs, and threatening further violence with tomahawk and scalping knife. He confronts Gen Procter about why the massacre continued and is ridiculed when urged to retreat.
