Inaugural South Monaghan Council Meets in 1959 Session
The inaugural meeting of the Township of South Monaghan Council was held January 12, 1959 at 10 a.m. in the Township Hall. Reeve elect George Dean presided, welcomed Councillor Jay Whittington, and the council pledged support. Roads accounts of $477.69 were approved for payment and forms for the 1958 road subsidy were authorized. The road supervisor rate was set at $1.30 and labour at $1.00. A convention fee for the Ontario Good Roads Association was approved, with related notices and costs recorded. Meeting adjourned then reconvened January 17 to consider contracting with J. L. Graham Co. Limited, with final terms to be set. The over-expenditure on the read programme prompted a supplementary By-law No. 646 and a highway subsidy request.
