Inaugural South Monaghan Council Meeting 1957

The South Monaghan council held its inaugural elect meeting on January 7 1957 at 1 PM in the township hall. Reeve Ray Bothwell and councillors Dean Fisher Anderson and Syer signed declarations of office and minutes were adopted. Rev W H Heustin spoke and offered a prayer, with thanks given to him. Various motions addressed fuel, grants, road conventions, seating, hall rent, heating repairs, tax arrears ledger, and submissions to road commissions. The meeting adjourned to February 4 1957.

Reverend C. H. Way Obituary In Toronto Church

Reverend C. H. Way longtime Crawford Street Congregational Church pastor in Toronto died suddenly January 11, 1957. He was married to Doris Tinney and was brother in law to George Clarke Don Tinney and Annie Tinney of Cavan. Funeral services were held January 14 with relatives from Cavan Millbrook and Port Hope in attendance.

Grace Church Ladies Aid Annual Meeting at Mrs Skipp's

Grace Presbyterian Church Ladies Aid met at Mill Brook home of Mrs Tom Skipp with fifteen members present. President Mrs Lorne Farrow led prayer and hymns, readings covered the Ten Commandments, paper on Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods, treasurer reported social year results, flower fund noted, officers elected with Mrs Tom Skipp secretary pro tem.

Christian Youth Under Christ Group Meeting Recap

Mr George Bedford of Mill Brook Public School spoke at CYUC in St Andrew’s Sunday School Hall on Sunday evening on the Seven Personal Questions. Barbara Fallis thanked the speaker. Lenore Ouellette led the worship. A skating party Saturday night brought enjoyment to members.

Benjamin Holmes Dies in Peterborough at 90

Benjamin Holmes died suddenly at St. Joseph's Hospital in Peterborough on Tuesday January 15, 1957. He was 90 and the husband of Hilda Mitchell, also father of Zilla Hyland. The funeral will be held January 17, 1957, at 2:00 p.m. in Ballyduff Presbyterian Church with interment at Ballyduff Cemetery.

Mrs Patton of Orono Dies After Long Illness

Mrs John Patton longtime Orono resident dies after a lengthy illness on December 21. Born as Lunn, she was married to Patton on June 1, 19 and lived on a farm north of Manvers before moving to Orono in 1954. Survived by her husband, a son, and a twin brother from Millbrook, she was active in the United Past Mistress of the L.G and Women’s Institute. Funeral held at Orono United Church with Rev. John Kitchen conducting. Local groups from Kendal and Orono I.O.O.F., the Bville Legion, and reading community mourn her loss.
