Cavan Township Council Reports February Session Actions

Council met February 17 with full attendance. They denied two petitions for plebiscite on liquor, reviewed road wood theft, approved bonding, and heard from Nesbitt on a windbreak fence. A wage dispute with a sanitary policeman was referred to health board, while arrears from 1992 were addressed and payment approved for contract work on the 12th concession. The council authorized fence projects and the Dominion Alliance liquor petition, plus plans to discuss county separation in Orono. They adjourned to March 17.

Local Bible Society Meeting in Bailieboro Delivers Lecture and Reports

The annual meeting of the South Monaghan and Cavan branch of the Upper Canada Bible Society met at the English Church in Bailieboro on Tuesday evening February 14. Rev W C Allen led prayer, Edward Carr presided, and Hugh Waddell read the financial statement showing liberal contributions. Alfred Dawson read the unanimous list of nominations. Rev J G Manly gave an engaging lecture on the history and destiny of the Jews. The Y P A will meet weekly on Wednesdays. Also notes on local business, a wax-turndown, and plans for an April public hall play. Miss Emma Staples ill. John Hickson and Lizzie Henderson married February 8. Robert Elliott heads to Washington Territory. Lifford Patrons of Industry debated grain-growing versus stock-raising. Mr W H Louth opens blacksmith business in Ida. Mr J A Badgeh purchased Hutchinson lot and plans a new shop.

Mount Pleasant Sabbath Tea and Concert Recital

The Mount Pleasant Sabbath school held its annual tea and concert with a strong turnout. The program featured Kindergarten songs, addresses by Reverends Bloodsworth and Young, a refined quartette, solos by Eva Elliott, recitations by Morris Rosenberg and J. D. Denny, and readings by Helen Lough. Receipts reached about 28 dollars. a social follows at the temperance hall.

Grain and hay were active with Spring wheat 65 cents, fall 71, oats 31 to 34, barley 35 to 40. pork sold at 9 to 10 cents hind and 8 to 9 front. beef abundant with slow sales. apples 50 to 75 cents per bag. potatoes 80 cents per bag. eggs 20 to 22 cents. butter up to 25 cents per pound, turkeys 1.25 to 1.50 each, chickens 60 to 70 cents per pair. beef surplus noted as the only stagnation.

John McNeely Dies After Short Illness

Mr. John McNeely died on the 12th inst after a brief illness. The funeral was very largely attended with many friends paying respects and expressing condolences to the family.
