Waiting for Erie Canal enlargement debate grows
The Engineering News promotes widening the Erie Canal to allow light warships and bulk grain from Duluth to Europe, but State Engineer Schenck estimates $500 million and warns the northern border may vanish first. He favors the St Lawrence route as cheaper and more versatile, a two-nation solution, and the natural sea outlet to Europe. Semeda holds a significant strategic position as the debate unfolds.

A Child’s Conversation on Death and Will to Live
A troubled child named Donald speaks of wanting to die and the mother or caregiver tries to reassure him. The scene includes a fragile discussion about life, death, a kitten, a pony, and a distant relative, with imagery of scissors, a grinder, water, and a dandelion as the child contemplates mortality. The dialogue conveys fear, care, and a final note of hope amid despair.
