Farm notes stress seven week turkey finishing for top prices and the need for intensive final feeding to avoid black pins and low grades. It also advises heavy feeding during molt for hens, emphasizes protein need, and promotes early field grazing to extend feeding and improve soil and early planting conditions.
The Extension Service of Utah State Agricultural College promotes a live-at-home program urging farms to maximize food for family and livestock feed. Utah farms categorize outputs as human food or livestock feed, with livestock then yielding meat milk eggs wool mohair leather and horsepower. Some Utah foods like wheat canned milk and others are shipped domestically and internationally, with continued notes of further details on the last page.
Principal Paul E. Beecher reports Milford High School begins with 103 pupils enrolled this year, forecasting growth beyond last year’s 106. Freshmen 32, Sophomores 24, Juniors 20, Seniors 21, with Junior High at 60. New plan emphasizes more classes and longer periods, plus clubs to foster effort without credits. Assembly at 3:00 p.m. Fridays.
Wilford Robinson and Mrs. Kate Joseph returned to Beaver from Los Angeles where their sister Mrs. Zoe Betteridge and her husband George were struck by a car while crossing a street. Mrs. Betteridge suffered two broken leg fractures a pelvis fracture and hip injury. Mr. Betteridge had a skull concussion and brain hemorrhage. The 17 year old driver had no license and crashed a mother’s car at fifty miles per hour. Mrs. Emma Robinson will stay in Los Angeles until the injured can be moved home.
The Mutual Improvement Association started its year with an opening program and dance at the L D S church Tuesday night. The Milford orchestra provided music as a large crowd danced until eleven. Visitors included Mary Burgstrom and Miss Eck of Cedar City while Mrs. Annie Atkin of St George stayed with her daughter Mrs. C C Dutton. Mr. and Mrs. W D Stephens of Taft Calif left Saturday after visiting Mrs. W M Blackwell and enjoyed mountain trips.
NIGHT mail planes frequently land at Milford field for a ten minute break to stretch legs and smoke. Both north and south bound planes reach Milford around 2 a.m. and pilots descend from the skies for a short rest at the local field.
Milford defeated the fast St George club 13 to 2 as Rochek pitched two hits, one scratch, and a clean single. Horton drove in several runs while Coleman fielded well and Crawford bunting featured the Milford clubs. In the afternoon Milford lost to Minersville 15 to 7 after Peterson gave up ten runs in the fourth.
Trainmaster J. T. Wardenburg visited Milford this week as emergency crews were recalled. J N Yeager returns from Provo to serve on the board while Univ of Utah players pass Milford on No. 7 en route to California. Repair work by Geo Crankie of Los Angeles and Ralph Lemon of Caliente continues at the passenger station lights. Freight flows include fruit, stock and cement for Boulder Dam confinement with about twelve cars daily. Around 3,000 wood ties per mile. Bases on balls and pitching details listed for local players.
Milford 4-H clubs dominated the Achievement Day held at Milford High School on Saturday. In bed-making, Milford’s second-year foods team defeated Beaver, led by Marie Gillies and Itha Patterson. Awards went to Ellen Ford for the style revue, Lola Tanner for best peaches, and scrapbooks to Mary Banks Ruth Pool and Ellen Ford.
The Democratic convention is called for September 28 at Minersville to nominate candidates for state legislature representative, one county commissioner four year term, one county commissioner two year terms, and county attorney. A Milford precinct Democratic primary will be held at the I O O F hall in Milford on Saturday evening to choose fourteen delegates and fourteen alternates to the county convention.
Milford drivers again fail to yield to a fire department engine. On a grass fire run down Main Street several cars stayed in front of the vehicle, delaying the responders. Officials say complaints and fines may be needed to enforce right of way.
Revival of buying marked the Togger y opening with extra clerks and steady queues as Mr Ellingsworth offered bargains. The sale drew one of Milford's largest crowds in months and continues through the week with more discounts on winter clothing.
Mrs Beth White former Minersville resident died in San Francisco on September 15 from pneumonia. Sister Mrs Geneva Williams accompanied the body to Minersville. services were held there September 18 with Counselor T W Rollins in charge. Survivors include her mother Mrs Sarah Bohn a son Billie White and siblings Mrs Geneva Williams Mrs Leis Waddingham and Albert Bohn.
Mrs James Glenn treasurer of the local Red Cross Chapter mailed Christmas boxes to Red Cross headquarters in San Francisco. The chapter directed by Mrs W F Cottrell produced six bedside bags six tooth brushes six pocket mirrors six pencils and six wash-clothes for disabled soldiers in hospitals at Christmas.
The road from the High Low to Kent's Lake via the Beaver mountains has been made passable for cars by the Beaver County Fish and Game club. Work blasted out high centers last week, aiding anglers late in the season and benefiting deer hunters for the upcoming open season.
Fenton Talbot, son of Mrs. Sarah Talbot, who was seriously injured when a car he was working under fell on his back, was moved from Milford hospital to his Beaver home this week and is improving rapidly.
