The Beaver County highway project extends from Milford Main Street north to the local airport. Under Max Baxter’s direction, the surfacing aims to withstand rising traffic and will aid travelers and students commuting to the airport. County Commissioner Ivas Mel Knight pursued state cooperation for aviation funding.
Milford visitors joined the Salt Lake branch of the G IA in celebrating its 50th anniversary on Monday. The Star- Light Garden at the Hotel Utah hosted a banquet in a very enjoyable affair with Mr. and Mrs PF Decker, Mr. and Mrs Henry Farmer, Mr. and Mrs 0 A Steenbock, Mrs James Holm, Mrs G G Cuddy and Mrs OG R Smith among the Milford attendees.
Preparations are under way for a Union Pacific Old-Timers Club No 2 outing and banquet in Milford on Sunday September 23. Charter two air conditioned Pullman cars will carry club members from Salt Lake City with arrivals in Milford about 2 PM. A banquet is planned and a motion picture program by Randall L. Jones will follow. Music by Miss Shirley Anderson and a Hawaiian guitarist, with a surprise guest from Milford will cap the evening. Return special cars are slated to reach Salt Lake City about 8:25 AM Monday. The Milford committee includes J. F. Langenbacker and W. G. White with local members. Officers and board members of the club are listed.
DuWayne Williams of Milford earned top honors at the Southern U Yah Livestock Show in Cedar City September 12 24. Judges praised the hogs for quality and variety winning first in sows over one year old, first in pen of three flat hogs, second in boat over one year, and third in fat hog. Accompanied by adviser Jean Figsl MH S ag teacher.
Milfort high school's agriculture department and the F.F.A. chapter anticipate a record enrollment and membership. Officers for the Milford F.F.A. include Saul Elmer as president, DuWayne Williams as vice president, Jack Goodwin as secretary, Miles Davidson as treasurer, and Maurice Williams as reporter. Posts for watch flag and athletic manager will be filled at the first F.F.A. chapter meeting.
George Litchfield a popular local barber was laid up after an accident last Sunday when hot tar burned his right hand. He was at a roofing job at home when he reached into the tar bucket by mistake, went to the hospital, and Dr Shannon treated him using ether as the operative dressing.
The Beaver County Fair awarded numerous prizes across crafts and needlework with names such as Doris Hughes Annis Opins shaw Stanley Beaumont and Barbara Sutton, while a separate note reports a tungsten ore shipment from Milford district to the Molybdenum Corporation of America. The shipment, from Prosper Mining and Copper Ranch properties, plus a new mill separator, signals the district’s rising ore production and industry activity.
Canning meats and vegetables dominate the list with grand champion Bertha Swindlehurst and top awards to James Holm, Ivan McKnight, Erma Cline, Lois Aoore, and others. Floral classes name Asters, Gladioli, Petunias, and roses with multiple winners including Marion Terry Jr and Gladys Gospill.
A 12 month old boy named David Hestington was recovering at Holy Cross hospital after a bronchoscopy to remove an open safety pin from his throat. The infant reportedly swallowed the pin during a bath, with Cedar City physicians unable to remove it. The family previously lived in Milford and his father is a Beaver schoolteacher.
The Southwestern Utah six man league starts this week with Milford hosting Parowan in the opening game. The league has seven teams this season as Hinckley joins from Millard County. The 1941 schedule lists games from September 19 to October 21 with byes for several weeks amid the expanded lineup.
National Park Service reports higher travel to Lehmian Caves national monument about 100 miles west of Milford. This year 467 persons visited in 1182 vehicles with August showing 230 cars versus 205 in August 1940. Growth credited to new lighting installations enhancing cave beauty.
Over the past week Milford hospital performed appendectomies on Barrett White of South Milford, Vance Roberts of Minersville, Harold McCulley, and Sherrie Adele Mills of Milford.
Utah State Fair runs September 20 to 27 at Salt Lake City fair grounds. Exhibits span Utah agriculture industry products arts and crafts, factories, livestock, and a horse show. More than 1000 youth participate in 4-H and Future Farmers programs, with a livestock parade on Governor's Day and a major intermountain horse show at the Coliseum. This year promises extensive displays and top entertainment.
WPA Play School resumes after a busy summer program of crafts hikes picnics and events. Two classes daily led by Mrs Joe Moore and Mrs Abe Fotheringham with a September 14 mothers meeting electing officers and committees. The town hall space was newly decorated with equipment added thanks to Mr Martin and town officials.

The planned five sided “dream house” for the war department in Arlington faces criticism as an emergency storage facility, costing 35 million and housing 29,000 workers. Critics question why the building is needed and urge reuse of Arlington space.
