Milford crews prepare this weekend to harvest the Milford Valley potato crop using new digging loading machinery. Jagle Radde notes the tools will speed work while Jack Mahonny promotes advertising campaigns for the 1954 Dodge cars and trucks. The general trout fishing season ends in Utah on October 9 with Fish Lake closing September 18. Forecasters expect continued strong creel totals for the season’s last stretch, especially in larger stillwaters and in the Uinta Mountains area.
Utah Fish and Game answers common questions on juvenile hunting eligibility. Under state law a minor may not hunt game birds or animals without an adult supervisor until age 16. At 14 to 15 a juvenile may hunt non game rabbits with supervision, and may buy a game bird license if supervised. At 16 a juvenile may purchase any fish or game license.
The 1955 Utah State Fair opens September 16 with horses as a major draw. Officials promise a colorful show featuring champions from Lisists, a national cutting horse contest with bigger purses, and the Budweiser Hitch Team of eight Clydesdales weighing over a ton each. Afternoon track racing runs September 21 to 24 at the grandstand.
Mayor Ray Kizer and Conn join Weston and Bud Bown with their wives in Salt Lake City for the Utah Municipal League session. Delegates will study sanitation health public safety and various city government topics during the weekend sessions.
John Stewart 21 of Canton Ohio and Fred Arnold Frederick 20 of Chicago were sentenced to five years to life by Fifth District Judge Will L. Hoyt after pleading guilty to assault with intent to murder. Trooper Gordon Farnsworth escorted them to Point of the Mountain following a gun battle with a Utah State Trooper. The defendants, both parolees of the Ohio State Reformatory, waived preliminary hearing.
Mrs Jane Lang oldest Milford resident celebrated her 85th birthday on Sept 13. A luncheon at her home featured centerpieces including antheridiums from Hawaii for a granddaughter Mrs W R Ford. Attendees included Freeman and Mary Kale El Paso Texas Mrs Isabel McKee Anaheim Calif three sisters Mrs Eliza Gunn Mrs Ida Tattersall Mrs Ireta Morris and sister in law Mrs Erma Anderson Beaver and Mrs Anton Johnson. Born Sept 13 1870 in Beaver to William and Caroline Anderson married July 4 1892 to James Lang. Living children Mrs McKee Mrs Kate and Ross Lang Milford. six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Election day is Tuesday November 8 in Milford Candidates Altman Bud Whittaker and Bad Bown vie for three council seats Registrars for districts No 1 No 2 and No 3 are Mrs Garnet Garfield Mrs Lola Banks and Mrs Odessa Ferguson Nomination petitions must be filed between Met 10 and Met 22 October 18 is the first registration day and November 1 the final registration day Those who voted in the last general election do not need to re register
A son was born September 6 to Mr and Mrs RC Willyard. A daughter was born September 6 to Mr and Mrs Monard Pryor of Minersville. Major surgeries included Lucille Belliston on September 6 and Ted Bradshaw on September 4. William Thompson September 9. DuWayne Williams September 12. Mrs Arshal Evans September 14. Annie Killam admitted September for observation. Helen Orrwae admitted September 9. Cleo Wyatt admitted September 12 for observation.
Ken Bliner won the Hereford calf at the livestock drawing. Coy Williams and Helen Gillins won top blue ribbon exhibitor prizes for men and women, the George E. Smith family led the family exhibit cash prize, and LaRee Stewart with Doris Elmer won the cake prize.
Beaver County H Club and FFA members showed creditable entries at the Southern Utah Livestock Show in Cedar City September 8 to 10. Jolene Yardley claimed the reserve champion steer sold to Lynn's Meat Market for 37 cents a pound. Nina Rue Yardley placed fifth in the Grand Championship class among 170 steers. Beaver County exhibited 28 steers with six prime, 15 choice, and eight good. ten lambs with 1 prime, 3 choice, 6 good. two hogs with one prime and one choice. County buyers purchased several animals for local interests. Clifton Reese and ElRoy Nelson entries noted. Nelson called to military service and Elray moved to Escalante earlier.
Enrollment at Milford Elementary School fell by about 50 students from 154 to start the year, as Principal Richard Bell released first term figures. Officials noted 1954 totals remained the peak, reflecting students who enrolled then and later moved away or changed districts.
The Milford Valley Hospital General Board at Beaver County Clinic selected Mrs. Theress Pitchforth for five years and Russell Mayer for four years to the hospital board of directors. Remaining members include Dr. Eugene Davie Rae Thompson and superintendent Jackie Williams.
The twelfth annual meeting of the Utah Water Users Association will convene in the Governor's Board Room at the State Capitol at 10 a.m. Tuesday September 20. The forenoon will cover regular business and the afternoon will host a round table with irrigation companies and individuals.
Mr and Mrs Ray Walker have moved into the Gribble home and Mr and Mrs John Williams with son Clair have relocated to Salt Lake City.
Dean Rice 24 of Milford Texas died when the westbound car overturned two miles west of Beaver on Utah 1. His wife DeLeen Rice is hospitalized in good condition with contusions. Edward Olsen 21 faced no injuries along with teens Luis Jimenez 16 and Darlene Walker 15 and driver Edward Bogarth 17. The convertible, from Beaver, hurled into an irrigation ditch after a three quarter turn. Rice was a Milford resident, son of Coy and Lydia Rice, born December 7 1933 in Littlefield Texas. He married DeLeen Lee in fall 1954 at Yuma Arizona. The body was prepared for shipment to Littlefield.
Coach Lee Petteys Tiger football squad, fresh from a near upset at Mt. Pleasant, travels to Richfield for a daylight non league practice game Friday afternoon. Milford fans are expected to accompany the team. Last week the Tigers lost 7 to 6 to Mt. Pleasant.
