Milford gains faster dial service as Mountain States Telephone prepares to switch on at midnight Oct 1. Gerald E. Vickers says the $250,000 project in Milford and Beaver custom builds each system after two years of planning tests will ensure top efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Dove Hunt Ends Next Thursday Seasonal Closure in 1955

The mourning dove hunt continues through Sept. 15 in Beaver Millard and Iron counties with good shooting in Milford Minersville. Hunters should check the daily time table and note federal law requiring head plumage and feet attached during transport.

Milford residents adapt to dial telephones as Mountain States Telephone Co assigns four operators to contact about 1300 customers. From 9 AM to 9 PM they guide responses test calls and explain dialing steps. Most appreciate the assistance though some fear the new system.

Milford Labor Day Celebration a Personal Highlight

Milford observed a successful Labor Day with Lions Club Jaycee and 3 H sponsorship. Eight horse races and exhibition riding drew a large crowd at the Fair Grounds starting at 1 pm with vocal entertainment between races. The Gay Notes from Della performed at the Jaycee dance with shell bracelets presented by Lions Club.

All-Stars Triumph Over White Market in Labor Day Softball

The Jaycee Junior Softball League championship saw the All-Stars defeat the White Market 32 to 13 on Labor Day evening. After a close start, the Stars pulled away with a powerful offensive showing, leading 11 to 1 by the second inning as seven hits sparked the rout.

Local applicants draw elk permits in Utah

About 3,000 fewer sportsmen applied for elk permits this year than in 1954. Utah Fish and Game reports 10,839 applications for 1,450 permits for the current season. Successful applicants include Freeman and Pearce in Beaver, Yount in Milford, Baxter in Milford, Lee in Beaver, Riley in Beaver, Smith in Beaver, Myers in Milford, Nichols in Milford, Mills in Lynndyl, Tolley in Milford, and Mills in Lynndyl.

Fleeing Robbery Suspects Captured After 90 Mile Chase

Two youths from the east, Prod A. Frederich and John Stewart, were captured after a 90 mile pursuit along Utah Highway 21. Trooper Gordon Farnsworth exchanged gunfire with the pair, found multiple firearms in their car, and stopped the chase near Minersville. They face assault with intent to murder and charges tied to a Baker Nev. robbery and possible federal charges.

Milford Minorsville chase ends with trooper gun battle

State Highway Trooper Gordon Farnsworth engages two fleeing suspects in a 90 mph pursuit between Milford and Minorsville last Tuesday morning. Farnsworth fires four times with his left hand, three bullets striking the car and a fourth puncturing a tire during the exchange.

Woman Archer Lost 24 Hours in Beaver Mountain

A Salt Lake woman archer Jeanne Jann wandered about 30 miles in rugged Beaver Mountain country after separating from her husband Monday evening. She found the Mitchell camp near Telluride water pipe around 4 p.m. Tuesday exhausted but unharmed, recounting she prayed for safety during the night. A large search party from Forest Service, Puffer Lake Resort, San Fernando Valley, and local residents aided by Sheriff Lee R. Fillmore and Game Warden Thel Riley recovered her after a long 24 hour ordeal.
