Milford High Commencement Week Climaxes Year of Activity

Milford High plans commencement week activities ending with 7 p m May 19 graduation exercises featuring four honor students and class president Monty Ashworth. Baccalaureate Sunday will feature Prof W Cleon Skousen as speaker with Rev J H Valine giving the invocation and Sheldon Seltzer offering the benediction. An annual honors assembly is set for 2 p m Tuesday with faculty and senior class programs.

Fire damages shed at Goodwin property

A trash fire at Orrin Goodwin's east of the Union Pacific depot started a blaze that scorched walls and roof of a storage shed. Wind shift carried embers onto the shed as Mr. Goodwin was burning old papers nearby.

Milford youths set for state track meet

Five Milford High School track athletes advance to the state meet in Salt Lake City after district honors at Delta. Clare Williams and Vee Wadsworth run 220 and 440, Boyd White and Gary Weston in the 880 and 440, with Dean Stoker in the shot and Wadsworth in the javelin. The relay squads also posted strong results: medley team Rael don Boudina, Stoker, Ronald Brinkman and Weston placed fourth, while the mile relay of Craig Mortensen, Gary Chamberlain, White and Williams finished third.

Ambitious Milford Teen Claudette Myers Seeks Medicine Career

Claudette Myers daughter of Mr and Mrs Claude Myers of Milford, born Crankston Minnesota May 20 1987, moved to Milford, attended Milford Elementary and With Schools, completed University of Nebraska extension work at Milford High School under Hansen. In 1954 she attended the University of Nebraska and graduated with an A average while working as a gas station attendant and teaching physiology in Lincoln. She plans to attend Westminster College Salt Lake City as a premedical student to pursue an MD.

Milford 1955 Street Oiling Nears Completion

Milford's oiling program for 1955 is near completion with 4,000 yards of finish gravel and 47,000 gallons of road oil mixed and laid to form smooth hard surface streets. Last year 6,100 feet were oiled in the first major paving effort in the city, and 7,300 feet this year will exceed 80 percent of the inhabited area. The $6,000 cost is funded without taxes or assessments, with residents along improved streets paying $38 each. State and county crews will assist, sharing equipment and manpower on county and state road work.

MIA Girls to Dance Saturday in Milford

More than 125 Beaver Stake girls will participate in the annual stake dance festival in Milford Saturday evening. The program at Lighted High School football field features seven sets from every ward, directed by Norman and Dixie Lamb state dance instructors. The event includes a 10 couple dance fissambo and several group specialty numbers.

Sixth Grade Safety Patrol Treated To Hamburgers

Milford Elementary sixth graders spent a Friday afternoon playing softball and eating hamburgers as a thank you from Mayor Ray Kizer and Milford City Council. The group will receive AAA safety patrol pins and certificates at a May 18 assembly, recognizing their patrol duties under teacher Corn C Harvey and principal Glen Oldroyd. Council members and wives helped with the barbecue as Mayor Kizer officiated.

Kanab Jaycees Sponsor Annual Race Meet

Kanab's annual race meet is set for May 19 20 and 21 and will be sponsored by the Kanab Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Jaycees with 25 members plan a full program including a parade and daily raffles. A special flight card on May 19 features top boxers from southern Utah, with the event climaxing in a Race Meet Dance on Saturday night.

Ralph Harland Russey 48 former Milford resident dies in Las Vegas hospital of a heart ailment. Born November 30, 1906 to Stanley O. and Pearl Russey, he married Helen Nelson on August 12, 1930 and worked at the Desert Inn as an engineer. Survived by widow in Las Vegas, parents in Salt Lake City, and brothers Kenneth, Harry of Salt Lake City and Thurman of Los Angeles. Service at 1 p.m. Friday in the Second Ward Chapel.

Frank Vernon Rollins, 70, died Monday at Beaver County Hospital from a heart ailment after a period of ill health. Born December 11, 1885 in Minersville, he married Etta Alice Corbridge on May 17, 1911 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
