J Ed Wilson, longtime railroad man and former county chairman, was named to replace J Nelson on the county board from Milford district. The appointment was made Monday at a special meeting after Nelson’s resignation was accepted. Nelson had served since the year’s start after a prior appointment by the governor and plans to return to business in California.
The Utah state land board announced higher prices in recent land sales. Twelve farms totaling 432 acres sold for 26,000 dollars. Milford buyers included Car A. Rohn with 80 acres for 3750 dollars, Cates 80 acres for 3750, W. J. Baker 140 acres for 4000, and L. R. Bowen 80 acres for 3100.
J Whitney Floyd extension forester for Utah State Agricultural College reports about 4 600 small forest trees have been planted on Beaver county farms over six years for windbreak and woodlot use. The Forest nursery supplies stock at low cost, with Siberian elm, black locust, hackberry nut, and Russian olive as leading species. County Agent Golden Stoker endorses windbreak planting on Milford flat, noting Siberian elm and Russian olive perform well. Over 25 000 trees have been ordered this season, with shipments starting around April 1. further planting information is available from County Agent Stater or Logan extension offices.
Mr and Mrs Plerengo and their children returned Monday from southern California where they attended a family reunion.
A 1936 Utah ground water summary by G H Taylor and H E Thomas shows higher fall and winter levels in most major basins. Wasatch western margin saw the largest rise, with Utah Lake valley up 5.0 ft and several other valleys rising 3.9 to 4.6 ft. Some wells declined, Cedar City valley all wells down, and overall fluctuations ranged from a 16.4 ft rise to 0.4 ft decline.
The Milford American Legion celebrated its 18th anniversary with a Tuesday night dance in the Milford High School gym. Attending were the Veterans of Foreign Wars the Veterans Auxiliary Milford High School faculty and their partners. Legion Auxiliary president Mrs Alvin Baker presented a large birthday cake to the Legion and a plaque from the U S Forestry Service. Auxiliary ladies served ice cream wafers and cake to about 60 attendees.
Park Superintendent P P Patraw and Sunset Easter pageant chair H E Peterson issued visitor rules for Zion Canyon Easter Sunday. Expect record crowds for services at the Great White Throne, with 34 mph speed limit, no alcohol, designated picnic areas, restricted camping, and traffic controls from Shear to Zion tunnel. Bring seats or wear cushions, prepare for an hour long organ recital before the 5 30 pm services.
Provo University completes plans for the eighth annual senior high school speech tournament and drama festival at Brigham Young University Thursday through Saturday, April 1 to 2. The program opens with a luncheon for coaches and principals, meetings for judges, tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. Friday, with oratory contests, dramatics demonstrations, luncheon round tables, and Saturday extemporaneous speaking and one act plays.
Home for the Easter vacation are Miss Marie Gillies of the University of Utah and Miss Katherine Kirk of Brigham Young University.
Walker Bank executives Kugay A. Ber ing and J. Kelly, from Salt Lake City, met Milford Lions Club members and local bankers during a routine stop. They praised Milford State Bank as a key Salt Lake financial link and expressed affection for the town, while noting livestock and farming conditions and limited fruit crop prospects due to winter snows. The Lions Club voted to invite four town board members to a March 31 dinner meeting to improve cooperation on community issues and discussed extending alternate Wednesday dinners to aid member recruitment.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in Greenville for D. James Williams prominent farmer and community worker and father of Mrs. D. E. Kirk of Milford. Williams died Wednesday night in a Salt Lake hospital. Mining location notices for sale at The News office.
Wyn naught of Gaver County travels to Salt Lake City to study refinery and manufacturing of Shell products under Dr. G. P. Roch. The program covers refining chemistry geology and marketing methods, with trailers and labs aiding instruction for Shell personnel across the Pacific coast.
Mil ford high school presented a ambitious version of the New York stage hit Broken Dishes, directed by H Parsons. The cast including Selma Johnson and Madge Moody impressed, with Otras acts by Margaret Motre and Blaine Kirk and instrumental interludes. Costumes from Lee's Style Shop complemented the production, praised for its preparation and cohesion.
