A Milford band and orchestra mothers club has raised nearly 450 for a Cedar City high school day band performance, with members urging community support through quilt tickets and upcoming concerts. The note highlights volunteer efforts, local loyalties, and communal celebration, praising the mothers and Relief society’s cooperation for a large reunion.
A six to seven member Fillmore County High boxing team will visit Milford Saturday night March 20 for six or seven matches with local youths. Main events feature Mont Griffiths Bill Nichols Varl Frazier and Ken Sherwood. Curtain raisers include local junior high bouts and a women friendly seating plan at the high school gym amid hopes to foster good sportsmanship.
The local high school Senior class will be guests of the Parent Teachers association at the next regular meeting on Wednesday March 27. The class prepared an unusual program to interest parents and a social will follow a brief business session. Program begins at 8 00 sharp.
A large turnout is anticipated as the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah prepare for their March meeting in Milford. Beavers through Washington counties are joining, with delegations from Ely Caliente Pioche and Las Vegas Nevada, plus the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and Salt Lake papers.
The Band and Orchestra Mothers club sponsors a concert next Thursday evening March 28 at the high school. A small admission will be charged with proceeds to pay for a drum major uniform. The event aims to draw support for a good cause.
CCC enrollee John Nunley of the Desert Range camp earned favorable notice in a Salt Lake City AAU boxing tourney despite a decision in the preteenweight section. Delta High boys Howard Holman Phillip Abbott Geral Samson also impressed among outstate entrants. Salt Lake Tribune praised Nunley’s five round duel with George Tucker and the crowd reaction.
Desert Range CCC athletes depart Friday afternoon for Kanosh for a four way track and field meet and baseball tournament featuring Provo Mt Pleasant Kanosh and Milford CCC units. A gala dance is set for Saturday night and Sunday Milford faces Mt Pleasant in a tournament game. Horse racing is a key event of the two day celebration.
About 55 men will leave the CDC at the end of the enrollment period on Monday March 26 to pursue other plans. Roughly 7 men are expected to be enrolled in early April to fill vacancies. District Inspector Major Henry P Blanks visited the Desert Ranger CC camp and Lehman caves spike camp with Lt Bergstrom, noting tip top condition.
A Milford Lions Club report notes Caliente merchants push a Las Vegas to Salt Lake road via the canyon, with Palmer suggesting a Caliente delegation meet Milford. The group directs the secretary to invite Palmer to discuss the project and mutual interests. Attending were O. Koch, R. Palmer, M. H. Pool, and others.
Nunley pressed to force the fight in the final heat but Tucker stayed composed. Tucker’s steady right hand put Nunley down twice for nine counts, sealing a decision as both boxers earned praise for a vigorous bout and shared acclaim.
Dr. R. R. Shannon and Mrs Shannon left Wednesday for Salt Lake where he aided in a major operation on Mrs. James Patterson at the L D S hospital. The procedure addressed a bad heart condition and was done in Salt Lake after the Pattersons traveled beforehand. Her condition after the operation is reported only fair.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a weekly story hour at the grade school every Friday after class. Two members read for about a half hour to inspire imagination and nature wonder, with themes of fairyland and heroism, drawing roughly 180 students across first to third grades. Beaver County District Boy Scouts reports show net proceeds from the fathers and sons banquet just over 100 dollars. Cash receipts totaled 140.50 with expenses 90.25. Attendees included S. Taylor Farnsworth and other district officers at Milford meeting.
The 21st Utah Legislature adjourned after bitter House Senate battles. Seventy percent of enacted measures touch taxation social welfare liquor control and education. 168 bills resolutions and memorials passed. 39 killed. 230 left in committees. 541 introduced. new laws raise taxes and offer limited relief such as extended redemption periods and a proposed homestead tax exemption up to $2 000.
With the arrival of the latest gasoline engine, a 25 kW emergency power plant is nearly installed at Milford airways radio station. The upgrade highlights Milford’s role in the western airways network and promises uninterrupted operations, supervised by Hk. L. Taylor, electrical engineer for the department of air commerce.
A preliminary 1985 census tally shows Beaver County with 446 farms as of January 1, up from 495 on April 1, 1930. Supervisor John B. Nielsen Jr. reports the 1986 figure is subject to correction, noting an increase of 61 farms or about 14 percent.
Embattled legislators in 1926 adopted a liquor control plan after long bickering. The measure creates a state store operation under commission control with no provision for by-the-drink sales anywhere. The senate finally ceded from the stand for by-the-drink sales after many hours of debate.
