Preparations are nearing completion for the March 23-24 Milford meeting of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah expected to be as large as any in the organization's history. Business sessions are scheduled for 3 p m Saturday and Sunday. A bridge tea for attending women is planned by Milford Lionesses, and a banquet with two 80 plate settings will precede a program of music and talks at Union Pacific dining room. A dance at Arion hall will follow.
The state board of health and the U S Public Health Service unite to curb disease spread by flies and mosquitoes. FERA labor will install pit toilets septic tanks and sewer connections at homes schools churches and business houses with materials supplied by applicants. W H Mills will supervise Beaver County work contact through relief offices.
Beginning this week M. J. Stephens rehabilitation supervisor for Beaver county will spend half of his time in Iron county. He will work Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays in Beaver and the rest of the week in Iron. Under his direction farmers on relief are being supplied with farm equipment work animals dairy stock poultry feed and seed by the government but only after all other resources are exhausted and on notes in favor of the government.
The Lions Club invites all Beaver County residents to join the town wide affair with a banquet and dance. H T Hanks leads the general committee with subcommittees for program women’s entertainment and housing. Banquet charges are one dollar per plate and one dollar for the dance, with early RSVPs to Mr. Hanks helping plans.
A cross section of CCC work in 18 months highlights: 487 lookout houses built, 180 maintained, 797 lookout towers built, 383 maintained, 1 605 326 man days fighting fires, 7 779 man days fire suppression, 87 067 man days fire prevention, 80 142 acres cleaned beyond prevention, 130% forest stand improvement. Nearby, Minersville teams beat CCC squads in basketball. barracks teams split a softball thriller 9 8. Dance postponed due to storm. discharges include Sterling Bradley and Chester Bowna amid jokes and light commentary.
The Milford M men basketball team won consolation honors and fifth place in the all church tournament. After losing 28-17 to Marriott M, Milford defeated Santa Ana 46-33 Rock Springs 36-28 and Roosevelt 22-29. The squad included Cladue Horton Zealand Murdock Carl Murdock Robert Killam Lawrence Webb Lawrence Easton Clyde Griffiths and Tommie James as scorer.
Missy Alta Lydia Biederman 22 died Monday night of septice mia in Cedar City. She was a Branch Agricultural College graduate active in Xi Lamia Tau and aesthetic dancing, later managing a Bryce Canyon curio shop. Survived by parents Frederick L. and Emily J. Biederman, Cedar City siblings Georgia and Lucille, and brother Grant. grandparents in Philadelphia. 3,000 small forest trees planted in Beaver County over five years for windbreaks and wood lots, with diverse species recommended for different soils and water conditions. Trees sold by Utah State Agricultural College nursery in Logan at about $2 per hundred. over 11,000 ordered for 1935 planting in Utah.
Sixty-four teams from Utah Wyoming Canada Idaho and Arizona gathered in Salt Sage Deseret gym for the season climax. Ogden Eighth and Lovan Seventh matched in the final with Ogden clinching the title as St Johns Arizona led out of state squads with the best record but finished fourth.
325 fathers and sons attended the Beaver district Boy Scouts of America banquet at Beaver high school. About 90 from Milford and 50 from Minersville joined the event, which will fund district operations. Despite late ticket pickups, service ran smoothly with ample venison toast and hot food.
Minersville will mark its 75th birthday on March 20 with an all day program starting at 10 30 and featuring a lunch at noon a track meet and other sports at 2 PM followed by a large dance at night with music by the K DYL Lone Pine Rangers of Salt Lake. Mrs Merrill Jameson and Mrs D R Banks arranged handbills to advertise the event.
A 70th anniversary program for the L D S Relief Society is set for Sunday evening March 17 at 7 80 in the Relief Society recreation hall. The program features opening song Recessional Relief Society chorus welcome address by President Mrs A Johnson Bible talks by Mrs Lena Levi vocal solos Open the Gates of the Temple Ruth duets The Lord Is My Shepherd by Mrs Ashworth and Mrs Mills a talk on Project Work and a final chorus by the Relief Society chorus.
Bill Nichols, Ford dealer, cites Henry Ford’s 1985 production program of 415 million dollars as proof of optimism for 1935. Nichols says Ford’s expansion signals stronger business and industry, noting the claim of ramping to over a million cars in 1935 drew front page attention.
Milford American Legion confirms Friday May 3 as the date for this year’s 49ers Day observance. The 1936 celebration aims to surpass all prior efforts, with a $5 prize offered for the finest whiskers grown before the event. Mrs J R Murdock Sr hosted the Pierian club at her home for an afternoon on English and current topics with light refreshments.
Milford Volunteer Fire Department hosts a dinner and dance at the firemen hall for 66 attendees to honor outgoing officers and honorary members. The event featured meals prepared by the lady firemen, a new women’s organization forming, games, dancing, and a mock fire alarm during the evening. Outgoing officers listed include Roy Carlson president and Owen Holt chief. new officers named are Max Root president and A. C. Johansen chief.
