Martha Jane Armstrong known as Auntie, born January 28 1897 in Sacramento, Calif. Daughter of John Andrew Smyth and Susan Lyons Smyth. Her life story unfolds as told to Mira Milton H Pool, with early farm days described in the valley.
The article recalls Auntie Martha’s life on a fertile Milford land along the old Frisco route. Travelers found food and rest at Smyth's or Smyth's Springs, and Auntie mentored weary guests on the porch. In 1880 81 she moved, married William Armstrong, and the ranch shifted to Frisco. She endured isolation, hosted railway workers, and aided the town’s early growth in Milford with a grand Main Street home and civic ties. She died 1910 at Holy Cross hospital with her husband nearby, leaving a legacy as a gracious hostess to railroad families and Milford residents.
A record from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers describes the Lincoln district mines near Milford and Minersville, noting Rollins mine as Utah’s first, with lead and bullets tied to 1857-1870 events. It chronicles owners, cave-ins, Horn Silver's management, and the district’s mineral wealth including gold, copper, and silver.
Mrs Roy Bradshaw hosted a birthday party with pinochle prizes won by E Cecil Edwards and Jess Edwards. Ladies prizes went to Norma Edwards and Alma Sly. Dozens of Milford residents and relatives attended from Beaver Levan and Delta Cola, with many gifts and a late two course lunch. A later party honored Janice Johns third birthday with games and ice cream.
Milford history recounts beginnings with the first post office near the new locker rooms, the original wagon and machine company warehouse, the first blacksmith shop run by Bill Orrick, and the first hotel on the old stage route. Fire destroyed much of the block. brick buildings replaced lumber after era. Rail freight yards and stages shaped Milford as a growing stop, with lines to Frisco and the Utah Central Railroad linked to Frisco by the Moran Church and the Horm Silver Mining Company. Bishop Juan Sharp of Salt Lake City led the railroad project completed about 2878.
Milford Lions at their regular meeting approved sponsoring a race meet for Western Beaver County in late June. Lions Smith and Jorgensen reported on the proposal, Murdock moved to sponsor, and White pledged county cooperation. A committee was formed to seek county assistance to improve the Milford fairgrounds ahead of the first Utah race meet of 1946.
Milford town workers and Western Beaver miners joined Milford officials to lay 3 inch gravel on 21 blocks across the residential streets from Monday through Thursday. County equipment and mine trucks spread the moist gravel, with oiling and rolling planned to resist spring thaw and prepare for winter traffic.
A deputy internal revenue collector will be at Milford Hotel on Thursday and Friday March 7 and 8 to assist Western Beaver County residents in preparing tax returns. Returns must be filed by March 15. Hours run 8 30 a m to 5 30 p m. All persons with 1945 income of 500 dollars or more must file a return.
Four carloads of livestock were shipped to Las Vegas this week by Young Brothers of Burbank Utah. The stock was trucked along Highway 21 to Milford loading pens.
County Agent Hyrum Steffer and four Beaver County leaders left Thursday February 28 to attend the 4-H Club leadership training school at Utah State Agricultural College. Accompanying him were Mrs. M. E. Handley, Miss Roda Openshaw, Harold Baker, and Lel and Smith. They will lead 4-H clubs upon return. Baker and Smith will train in cow testing for the Beaver Dairy and Minersville project.
Milford readers are invited to view the first postwar Chrysler at South Utah Auto Co showrooms in Cedar City on Saturday March 2. Sales manager J Furt Porter says production will increase to meet demand for the new streamlined model and urges Milford citizens to attend.
Challenger Airlines inaugurates regular air service from St Gouree to Salt Lake City with three weekly round trips. Southbound depart Milford at 12 24, northbound at 2 49 pm. Service to run Wednesdays and Fridays with future extensions to Arizona and New Mexico. fares to be announced next week. reservations via Salt Lake City office.
Lois Wardingham presided at the installation of the new Cedar City auxiliary on February 26. Twenty three ladies attended in uniform as officers were installed and presented the Bible by Mrs Minnie Gordon. The gathering included members from Apiford and Salt Lake City with brief remarks by Mrs Gordon and Mrs Bryon.
