Mrs Howard Cook returns from a week with her parents Mr and Mrs C C Koch in town to convalesce from a tonsil operation. Sister Miss Rietta Koch visits. Dean Myers and Don Elmer join rail crew training as switchman and fireman. Glenna Collins visits relatives in Brigham City and Stockton, with Mrs Wil and Mrs Henry Edwards families. Helen Baker and Bobbie Nichols in U S Navy at San Diego take a government course in sheet welder work. A fire of unexplained origin Saturday afternoon last week destroyed a small store house on the surface of the Old Hickory mine. It injured two Segerstrom interests employees operating the shaft under Prosper Mining company. Andy Hollingshead and Jack Davidson were hurt. Hollingshead was taken to hospital for treatment. Both have recovered and Davidson has returned to work.
The Beaver County draft records align with a News report from July 17 listing official order numbers for July 1 registrants. Names include Keith Berrant, Vernon Beard, LaVoy Green, Warren G. Smith, Austin Steven William W, Wayne Arnold Rah, Howard Calvert Fordham, James Howard Low, Donald Clayton Holbredk, Arthur Bay Hates, John Elwin Clay, Robert Richard Martin, Fred Roberts Pryor, Norman Hutchings, Albert J. Smith, William Arnold Low, Jeff H. Marshall, Houston B. Baxter, Douglas Dean Hutchings, Chester Nelson Slys, Daid Sareel Williams, and Douglas Dean Hutchings bearing various order numbers. Some registrants have volunteered or been deferred, with eight 1-A men remaining as of October 16.
Walter E. Martin town board president and members reviewed Milford’s aluminum scrap drive this Thursday afternoon. The collection totaled 251 pounds net as part of a nationwide effort to aid defense material shortages.
George B. Jordan of Dallas elected president of the International Association of Lions Clubs at the 25th annual convention. Edward H. Paine and Dr E G Gill elected first and second vice presidents. D A Skion named third vice president after a multi-candidate contest. Toronto chosen for 192 convention. five directors named. Melvin Jones reaffirmed as secretary-general. The report cites 433 new clubs and 9,080 new members, total clubs 4,082 and membership 147,407. Jordan emphasizes citizenship, civic and moral improvement programs.
Aug 8 designated as Fair Grounds Cleanup Day with wagons, rucks, and many volunteers urged to help clear and prepare the grounds for the big 1941 event. Local men and boys with rakes and shovels expected to participate.
The new 9b-foot locker building south of the tennis court is in operation though painting remains. White with blue trims replaces railroad yellow. The plan ends the close identity between a caboose and a specific conductor, saving switching time and expense as crews load from the locker room to the arriving train.
Beaver county farmers push vaccination as brain fever spreads with new cases near Milford. County Agent Hyrum Steffen reports over 200 horses vaccinated and urges more to protect stock. Costs 32.25 per animal. vaccination praised for high protection levels and reduced disease risk.
One of the largest and most interesting Milford parades occurred Thursday during the Pioneer day celebration. Sponsored by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and local L D S groups, the event was planned quickly with Mrs. Rudolph Nielsen as general chairman. The rapid preparation time did not dampen the success.
Milford plans a three day fair starting September 6 with all night dances Friday and Saturday and a Thursday opening event. A queen contest, under Milford Mining Association sponsorship, will award 15 dollars to the queen and 5 to each attendant. Applicants must ride well and submit by August 20, with entrants meeting August 27 for a luncheon where judges will select the winner.
Planned as a good time for Milford boys and girls, juniors of the community enjoyed a day filled with activities. After the parade, a program at the L.D.S. recreation hall featured races and contests, with prize costs covered by sales of ice cream, soft drinks, and hot dogs under committee supervision.
Washington buzzes with wartime activity as White House and Capitol bustle, military officers in abundance, and civilians in Red Cross regalia. Congress remains in session amid bills extending selective service and draft property measures, with massive defense appropriations and lend lease funding shaping a congested calendar.
The Wesley Brotherhood will meet Sunday evening at seven at the Methodist church. Reverend Willis Miller will speak on Spiritualism and demonstrate tricks he claims imitate spirit effects. He argues Spiritualism is a fraudulent use of magic. All men are invited.
