Eugene S Briggs of Enid Oklahoma was elected unanimously as president of the International Association of Lions Clubs at its 31st annual convention. He succeeds Fred W Smith of Ventura California. The secretary general Melvin Jones reported a record year with 618 new clubs and 31 697 members added, bringing totals to 6808 clubs and 358 144 members. Lions Clubs expanded to Sweden Switzerland Chile and Newfoundland with a network in 23 countries. Briggs urged world peace and said Lions would pursue representation at United Nations specialized agencies where they can assist in fostering international understanding.
