A Milford News letter from L M Robinson discusses July 11 column remarks on road projects in Millard County Utah. It highlights cooperation among local figures including Walter James Attorney Sam Cline and W H Child with Governor Blood, urging a barbecue gathering at The Tall Trees to push highway efforts and civic unity. The note also recounts a May thunderstorm display near Black Rock and a lightning strike that split a cedar tree near the party’s car.
The Milford Junior League defeated Minersville 10 to 8 in a Monday contest at that place. Milford handed the Minersville lads a prior 10-9 loss, with Milford batteries Roberts James Martin Carter and Minersville batteries Meyers W Davis Allison. Milford players included Gordon Murdock Ray Baker Warren Thompson Robbie Davis Keith Johnson Carrol Johnson Allan Bingham Bud James and Gilbert McCulley. S. G. Cole was noted at the game from his mining property.
Milford Lions Club proposes oiling about 3000 feet on Main and Center streets and Sixth Avenue to improve surface durability of Highway 21. Committee members L. A. Wynaught George Jefferson and M. H. Pool will present the plan to the town board, aiming for state road commission cooperation and faster completion before contractor J C Compton moves on to Nevada.
Minersville Troop 326 Boy Scouts of America has 27 registered scouts under Scoutmaster Garland Hollingshead. Five are first class Royle Woods Jimmy Sherwood Bert Craw Neil Rhenstrom and Jay Banks. They undertook a week at Duck Creek camp with 23 scouts and four earning advancements. Plans exist for a trip to Kents Lake. The troop committee includes C. K. Jameson chair and T. W. Rollins Bishop George Marshall P. S. Worthen and Oliver Graff. Hollingshead, a BA C graduate of 1934, is credited with the troop’s notable gains and heavy involvement with local teaching duties.
Notices posted in town announce a July 22 filing deadline in Salt Lake City for grazing permit applications in district 3 under the Taylor grazing act. After licenses are issued, grazing or moving livestock on the public domain without a license is unlawful. The notice is signed by Archie D. Ryan acting chief of field division department of grazing.
Mrs. Gertrude Baxter Dewey wins six months scholarship plus 25 dollars in cash in the Milford News and L. D. S. Business College campaign. Audrey Raines takes second prize three months and cash. Olive Hardy of Minersville earns third prize of 15 dollars.
The last surviving Civil War veteran in southern Utah, Jesse P. Stephenson of Nada, died Thursday night after a Monday stroke. He was about 90, resident in Beaver County since 1920, survived by two sons Anthony and Oscar and daughter Mrs. Fred Huennl of Muncie Indiana. Funeral set for Sunday at Milford L D S chapel with military honors, interment in local cemetery before eventual removal to West Virginia.
Milford plans a Miss Utah contest as part of Pioneer Day celebrations. Ten entrants are named Phyllis Whitbeck Maxine Kirk Ina Smith Emma Patterson Marie Angell Patra Young Kathryn Kirk Bernella Jones Peggy Blackburn. Votes cost 100 for 10 cents and may be cast at several town locations. any resident may nominate another candidate. The event is led by Milford ward M men with sponsorship from local L D S church groups and invites wider participation.
Engineer Lewis of the state road commission visited Eureka on Monday with Senator P. J. Pennell County Commissioner Frank Bacon and John F. Rowe. They reviewed the proposed Eureka to Salt Lake City highway via Cedar valley and Pinion canyon scouting Chimney rock area. Lewis could not specify start date but said survey work had been ordered and would begin soon.
The Standard Oil Company of California launches a new ad series featuring Standard Penn, a 100 Pure Pennsylvania. P. W. Bradfield of Milford acts as distributor for Beaver county with retailers W. R. Martin, A. O. Hardy garages, Messenger Patterson, George C. Murdock, A. J. Meredith, C. T. Baldwin and Ezra White service stations.
Civilian Conservation Corps camp No. 2565 to be built on the southwest bench near Milford under the Interior Department grazing division. Camp foreman Sam Shields leads the effort with Captain Gilbert S. Knapp and 15 Beaver camp men supplying equipment. Expected occupancy in about 20 days with work including erosion control water development and road and trail construction.
J Sam Hanks and his son Whitney of Salt Lake are remodeling the vacant Hanks building next door to the Fireman’s theatre formerly occupied by Rees Palmer. They install a full length partition creating two long store rooms. Occupancy of one or both spaces is not confirmed, though rumor favors a new grocery store.
Milford defeats Beaver 12 to 5 marking their second win over the Beaver squad this season. Cedar City beat St George 4 to 3, Dixieites suffer first league loss. Minersville edge Parowan 16 to 15 in a 12 inning thriller showing Parowan’s grit. Milford’s hitting spree includes Tanner Carter Rochek Horton and Coleman with key plays and fielding highlights amid a tense contest.
