Milford wildcat well nears completion near oil show

Hi Capitan Drilling Company of Russell Kansas reports a wildcat 16 miles northeast of Milford reached 8200 feet by late Thursday. Mr Maud Spurgeon and Floyd Koster describe ongoing tests, leases, and historical wells as 13 men operate a diesel rotary rig with plans to finalize casing and determine production by Friday or Saturday.

Mil ford News Subscription Contest Draws Thirty Contestants

Thirty contestants, twenty boys and ten girls, have registered for the Milford News subscription contest with over 800 dollars in prizes plus renewal cash rewards. The July contest features first and second prizes for boys and girls, plus weekly awards and commissions for non winners. Sally Kaslam, 11, claimed a promptness prize by turning in three subscriptions at 7 am. Entries remain open at The Milford News office with renewals earning extra points and a weekly pot tally posted Saturdays.

John A Root Dies in Salt Lake City at 92

John Anson Root 92 died at 8 45 am Monday in a Salt Lake hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday July 7 at the Milford LDS Chapel. Root was an early Utah pioneer and Milford resident who drove a mail stage and engaged in ranching mining and hotel management. He moved between Milford Cedar City and Salt Lake City, leaving a legacy as a stage driver and baseball fan. He is survived by his daughter Mrs PF McKay three sons Pratt Max and Cass Root three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery at Beaver.

Notice to register under the Selective Service Act

The notice explains men must register on or within five days after their 18th birthday and in certain reserves. It warns of penalties for failure and provides Beaver County Selective Service Office location and Thursday hours. It also directs Milford Post Office for west county registrants with Mr Rudolph Nielsen.

Milford residents fined in Koch Court cases

In Justice D. C. Koch's Court last week Leroy Nay of Milford was fined $2 for driving without an inspection sticker, while Jack Stoddard of Milford received a $10 fine on a drunken driving charge.

Nutritionist to Demonstrate Food Freezing Techniques

Miss Elna Miller extension nutritionist from USAC will give a demonstration on Preparing Foods for Freezing next Tuesday July 11 in the Relief Society Room Mil ford LDS Chapel. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. with Miss Hattie Kilgore of Kerr Canning Company demonstrating canning methods. Public invited.

Milford Postmaster Rue Nielsen announced a new daily mail run effective July 1. Mail departs Milford for the east end at 7:00 a.m. and arrives from Beaver at 3:30 p.m. each day.

Milford Fourth of July Celebrated With Free Barbecue

Milford’s Fourth of July event drew cheers from Al Kirk Perry Neal and Lions Club chairman Claude Horton who oversaw a free children’s barbecue. The day started with a kiddie parade featured decorated bikes and wagons, followed by a softball game at the fairgrounds and races in Library Park. Local volunteers and merchants provided food drinks and entertainment including a theater show and a public address mike. The event also noted community updates such as a construction project on North Main and residents on leave or vacation.

Farm Machinery Demonstration Slated Near Beaver, Utah

The First Ward Farm west of Beaver on River Road will host a farm equipment demonstration July 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 30 p.m. Sponsored by Robison-Kershaw Company of Salt Lake City, the event marks the first showing of the Caterpillar Tool Bar with subseilers cultivators chisels and ditchers. Demonstrations will also feature the Caterpillar Diesel D-4 Tractor and the Caterpillar No 40 Hydraulic Scraper at Beaver with further stops in Cedar City Enterprise and St George on subsequent days.

The Summer Home Projects class will not be held next week announced by Mrs. Hansen the instructor. The school will be open each Thursday except July 13.
