V M Blackwell 32 night operator at Airways radio station died Wednesday night after a septic infection that began with a boil. Known as Red, he served in the navy and will have a brief semimilitary funeral Sunday at 1 30 p m in the M E church before burial at Motchkiss Colorado, his birthplace. The body is prepared for shipment by Eamy Ward of the War Funeral home.
C. A. Haskell reports shipping a car of Grimm seed to an eastern seed house on Wednesday. The shipment, valued at about 5000 dollars on a cleaned basis, consisted of common and certified seed purchased in Beaver and Ron counties. Growers were paid 18 cents per pound for common seed and 24 cents per pound for certified seed.
The marriage of Mrs. Erma Osborn Gillies and Attorney Sam Cline, both of Milford, occurred Friday morning January 11 at the West Adams L D 3S chapel in Los Angeles with President Lloyd officiating. They honeymoon to San Francisco by boat after a small ceremony and reception, returning to Milford next week to establish their home.
The article notes a restart of Monday evening classes for the Utah adult education project with sessions on grammar, radio, dramatics, social economy, physical education, and chorus. Joseph C. Smith of Milford was elected president of the Beaver county school board at the regular meeting. He succeeds George Marshall of Minersville who retired. J. Albert Muir of Beaver was elected vice president with S. G. Hickmin as treasurer and E. A. Griffiths of Beaver reappointed clerk for two years. Dr. C. W. Hancher will preach at the local M E church Sunday January 20 at 11 00 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. services followed by the official board meeting.
Commander-In-Chief James E. Van Zandt of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will visit Beaver in southern Utah for a veteran’s banquet a public meeting and a large dance. He will be accompanied by Utah state commander Dr W G Preston.
H A Christiansen of Beaver, elected county commissioner for a four year term in November, became chairman of the board at the first meeting of the new board held Monday. Frank Pryor of Minersville is the other new member with O F Hubbell the holdover. Christiansen replaces Grant H Tolton who was defeated for the Democratic nomination. Deputies and other matters were postponed to the next meeting.
The local Parent-Teachers Association holds its first meeting of the year next Friday evening January 18 at 7 30 at the high school. A short business session will precede an evening of entertainment. All parents and teachers are urged to attend and mingle.
Desert Range Community College camp hosts a winter baseball game on the old hard pan with players warming up and playing like pros. Captain Curtis visits with his brother and three musicians while Dr Arvin operates on Sheridan Rogers for appendicitis. The Mirage contest is won by Chris Chesley and Fred Hales named editor, promotions for Ralph Brown Reed Robertson and Bob Braithwaite, Willis Rogers the cheerful barber roams the desert trails. The motive for outdoor activity remains unclear amid warm Milford weather and arid surroundings.
The Milford Lions Club voted to invite the Civic Clubs of Southern Utah to hold their March meeting in Milford to coincide with the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen St Patrick’s day dance. Director L A Wynaught was elected and named to invite the Cubs. The January meeting resumed after holidays with a luncheon by S E Peer.
Milford hosts Delta in the first high school league home game of the season as locals rally behind a revamped team. Be sure to attend and support the Minersville and Milford Fillmore matchup while Hollywood buyer Leck advances land deals in Milford valley.
Mrs D H Sullivan and Mrs Leichty of the state child welfare department met Milford American Legion Auxiliary members at the Atkin hotel to discuss a state health survey. The group aims to sponsor the program, canvas homes, and submit data to the legislature to improve health and sanitation in Utah.
