Milford May Become Uranium Boom Town

Milford could surge as a uranium producer as ore found around the town prompts interest in open-pit and shaft mining. Old Hickory mine near town, now leased to North Star Metal Mines, shows samples from under 20 percent to about 0.85 percent uranium. The North Star group, led by J A Moren and Gottfried Peterson, has been active in development and shipments from the old open pit as other claims in Mineral Mountains and nearby areas report uranium finds.

Parking and speed fines from Judge Koch court

Neal Peterson and Ephraim fined for driving under the influence of liquor, jailed five days and fined $100. Numerous others, including Elwood Jefferson, King Varley, Paul Whiteside, A D Carter and more, paid small fines for parking and stop sign violations. Speed infractions on Main Street produced larger penalties up to $9.

Mountain States to switch Milford Beaver to dial service

Mountain States Telephone announces fall 1955 dial conversion for Milford and Beaver exchanges from manual to dial. Milford will get new building on Main Street with central office equipment by June and a new numbering plan using prefixes Dudley 7 and Hem Inch 8. Minersville will use prefix Adley 8. The shift, part of Bell System standardization, aims to boost future growth and improve service.

Milford Elementary First To Meet March of Dimes Quota

Milford Elementary School led the March of Dimes drive by achieving 100 percent collection early in January. By 9:45 a.m. 318 children had donated 31.20 dollars in dimes for a 10 percent participation, with more than eight dollars added later. County Chairman Max Mecham praised the school for its record and publicity, while Milford chairwoman Mrs. LaRue Varley hailed the effort as a model start for the city campaign. Upcoming events include a canteen hosted by the Lady Lions on January 7 and 8, with rides on the fire engine for children shown on the back page.

Auto Accident Spoils Oldroyds Christmas Vacation

Principal Glenn Oldroyd and Mrs. Oldroyd were on a Christmas vacation trip to visit relatives when their car was struck by a vehicle turning left near Central south of Richfield. Mrs. Oldroyd sprained her ankle, 2% year old Max sustained facial injuries, and the car sustained about 5000 dollars in damage.

Library Fund Receives Boost From Community Givers

Milford High School Library Fund treasurer Eva Stonehocker reports a holiday increase of 60 dollars from bake sale proceeds and individual donations. A 50 dollar check came from the Lady Firemen and a 10 dollar check from the Junior Old Timers led by Frank Grimes, with Merlyn Merryweather as president.

Civil Defense to Sponsor School Immunizations
