Frank G. Martines of Richfield was unanimously reelected president of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah at the two day St George convention. C. W. Love Jr. of St George and Leo J. Nielson of Kanab named first and second vice presidents respectively. Ray E. Carr retained as secretary treasurer for another year.
Desert Range CCC Camp reports new dining furniture and table tops, a set of new plates and cups, and a forthcoming camp paper titled Rap. Enrollees Truman Little and T Howard Whimpey have been discharged to attend school and seek work. A group of fourteen young people enjoyed a progressive supper party Sunday night as part of holiday activities. The party started at the J. J. Keough home and moved to the D. S. Williams, M. H. Pool and Gene Kirk homes in order. The attendees included Misses Maxine Kirk, Virgin Killam, Sarah Pool, Ruth Pool, Norma White, Madeleine Keough, Lois Williams, and others, along with Bryant Roberts, Ed Romick, Delmar Kirk, Steinle Bailey, Claire Griffiths, Harold Smurthwaite and Farres Peterson.
Beaver County approves a 1935 budget totaling 21 280 with detailed departmental disbursements. The board lists expenses for administrative officers' salaries, commissioners' costs, agricultural and contingent funds, janitorial, telephone, criminal costs, utilities, deputy assessors, courthouse insurance, furniture, vital statistics, district court reporter, jurors, health officers, and a biennial audit.
Mrs Minnie Beard Walker 58 of Syracuse near Ogden was killed when her car was struck by an Oregon Short Line passenger train at a trade crossing near Clearfield. Her husband Daniel H Walker 78 was critically injured with internal injuries and severe facial trauma as they returned from taking their son Myron Walker to Ogden. Miss Verna Walker, Milford high school teacher, was excused from duties to remain upstate.
Nearly 2,000,000 of road construction was completed in 1934 as U S 89 reaches a surface standard and U S 91 in southern Utah advances with half a million dollars more under way. Speakers credited civic clubs for sustaining the effort while praising the organization’s cooperative work and plans to sponsor Alaska routing.
The G I A to the B of L E elected officers for 1935 led by Insurance Secretary Ida Steenbock and President Wanda Holm. Officers installed December 20 with a banquet, then a bridge evening at Alice Low's home where Mrs Jeffers won high score and Mrs Dawson took honors.
Miss Lucy Lyman of Mayfield, 32, visiting Milford on mercy duty for her sister Mrs. V Waddoups, died Saturday from pneumonia. Born Bluff August 20, 1902, she was shipped New Years Day to Mayfield for funeral services Tuesday. Survived by sisters C H Boyd, W A Bond, W Waddoups, Angie Lyman. brothers J Alvin Lyman, Henry M Lyman, Ezra D Lyman, Wayne R Lyman, Don Lyman. Parents preceded her in death.
Otto Steenbock departed Sunday to work on the Cedar branch line for a few days.
The marriage of Miss Ina Sumsion of Salt Lake and Dr. Rollin R. Shannon of Milford took place Saturday evening in the Hotel Utah president's suite with Rev. Jacob Trapp officiating. Mrs. Shannon, a Salt Lake nurse and United Air Lines stewardess, and Dr. Shannon, Indiana University and Stanford medical school graduate, recently began practice in Milford and have won many friends.
Mrs L G Clay hosted the Pierian club Friday night with members and guests including Mrs I L Kelly Mrs J R Murdock Sr Mrs C C Roth Mrs Vena H Wilson Mrs R F White Sr Mrs Lottie Bardsley Mrs Lamar Outzen and Mrs J J Sanford of Preston Idaho After a lesson in English and an article by Mrs Kelly dainty refreshments were served The article notes Mrs J Cass Root is improving after over two weeks illness
