Milford Social Notes Include Visiting Friends and Local Events

Miss Marjorie Casterline returns Sunday from Bryce Canyon lodge where she worked this summer. Many locals and visitors arrive or depart for wintering in Baker California and Salt Lake City. Notables include Mr and Mrs Noel E Hoblitt, Brunelle Outzen family, George Jefferson, Isabell Stark, Helen Crooks, Everett Locke, Miriam Harlow, Bryant Roberts family, Gene Kirk, Bob Cheatham, and a bridge gathering hosted by Mrs George Jefferson.

Milford First County Fair Opens With Horse Races and Homecoming

The Milford fair grounds host a three day event starting September 6 with a grand homecoming on the 6th featuring a 1000 pound beef barbecue and dances. Seven states send horses for twenty four races including a Milford handicap over one mile and 70 yards with purses totaling 1515.00. Treasure Island Follies perform nightly with open air shows and a large gymnasium dance at Milford High. The opening parade and public display occur September 7, as the fair continues through September 9.

Film Comic Booked for Night Show at Beaver County Fair

A film comic known for lampooning Hollywood and Calcott Coolidge is booked for the Treasure Island Follies night shows at the 1939 Beaver County Fair in Milford. The act, featuring Barnett, has appeared in 128 films and will perform across three nights September 7 to 9.

Utah Secretary Monson Elected Vice President of NASS

Utah Secretary of State B E Monson was elected vice president of the National Association of Secretaries of State at the Dixville Notch conference August 16 19 he will become president at next year s convention taking over from John B Wilson of Georgia. The group opposed compulsory registration of trademarks and trade names stating it would burden small businesses. Milord county fair opens soon with the grandstand top installed and preparations complete for a ten day event.

Treasure Island Follies Bring Hollywood Talent to Milford

The Treasure Island Follies arrives in Milford direct from Hollywood for a high class show at the Southern Utah fair. Sixty performers including dancers singers and comical acts will appear in costumes and described as polished entertainers amid a grand festival atmosphere.

Third of Century Is Commemorated By Jefferson Merc

Jefferson Mercantile marks 34 years in business with a full page commemorative ad. The ad lists department managers and staff, honors founders Henry and Mrs George Jefferson, notes incorporation in 1910, and praises Milford's growth and home-coming events. A souvenir is offered to visiting ladies during the fair period.

Milford Fair Hours Prompt Local Store Closures

Stores and all establishments in Milford will close from about 1:80 to 5:00 p.m. for the three days of the fair. Local housewives and residents are advised to plan accordingly. Later hours may ease traffic and congestion, but the schedule is expected to be observed.

Race Horses Arrive in Milford for Training

A number of race horses have arrived in Milford and are being housed at Milford's new training track for training purposes as others arrive daily.

Milford Library To Close For Move And Dedication

The Milford public library will close Thursday evening August 31 to reopen in the new building on Wednesday September 6 at 7 pm. The dedication occurs that day at noon with a short program at 2 pm. Affected staff include librarian Freda Outzen. A week of showers has cooled the valley after a period of heat.

Exhibition Deadlines For Beaver County Fair Entries

Mrs. M. H. Pool sets exhibit deadlines for Beaver County Fair. Displays accepted at the new shop building on Friday Sept 1 and Monday Sept 4 and Tuesday Sept 5 by 2 pm. Judging on Sept 6. Cut flowers due by 10 am Thursday. Kerr canning contest mirrors 1938 rules with two prizes of Kerr jars for best two jars and one dozen jars for second.

The marriage of Beth Terry of Rigby Idaho to Ira Mitchell Fisher of Milford was held Tuesday August 29 in the Salt Lake temple. Fisher is the son of Parley B Fisher of Milford. The couple will live in Milford after a Idaho trip. Fisher is a Milford high school graduate and LU S A student.

Schools Open Sept 12 With New Buildings and Buses

Beaver county schools plan regular instruction starting Tuesday, September 12 after an institute day on September 10. Minersville students will attend Milford High School this year, new Milford and Belknap buildings open, six man football approved, two new buses in operation under contract.

Visit by Dr Cottrell Given Up Due to Lost Voice

Ohio based reunion plans for Milford Sunday School at the Methodist Episcopal church were called off because Dr Pred W Cottrell of Oxford Ohio has temporarily lost his voice. Dr Cottrell a Miami University faculty member will visit Milford with family until September 10.
