A provocative drink nickname circulates among officials and newcomers in Washington, DC. Patrons request a Slap-a-Jap, paying 25 cents and receiving a glass of water and a 2-cent War Savings Stamp before continuing with their order.
Citizens of Milford are warned of a series of tests and drills on civilian defense ordered by the Civilian Defense Headquarters. Air raid wardens will visit homes and ask for cooperation. volunteers are still needed and residents not currently serving should register at the Town office.
Invin Layton of Woods Cross visits at the William Baker home. D R McKnight of Minersville helped his son Ivan harvest grain last week. Mr and Mrs Jack Barton formerly of Greenville visited sister Mrs Keith Billins and family then left for Los Angeles where Barton works at an airplane factory Virginia Rollins joined them for an indefinite stay. Mrs A B Cline Beaver and daughters Mrs Clay Jackson Milwaukee and Mrs Glen Pickett Texarkana and Mrs George Geckett and Mrs Ed Bohn Beaver visited last Thursday at James Rollins home. Miss Mary Fisher hosted several friends Thursday evening at their new home.
Mrs Verda KR Smith writes from Council Bluffs Iowa that her husband First Lieutenant Kenneth A Smith is stationed in Alaska. He served as night foreman for the Union Pacific shop force before entering active service from reserve status. Alaska is described as beautiful with abundant fishing and lakes.
The article notes gas masks priced at about 9.5 dollars each with transparent cellophane like headgear that does not fog. Buyers can get two masks with an 18.75 dollar War Bond and aims to distribute thousands through wartime finance and payroll savings.
Milford and western Beaver county launch a broad salvage push as the war effort demands increased material flow. Theo dore Krossholm serves as county chair and coordinates collection of iron steel brass copper aluminum and lead while tin cans are not needed in Utah. Rubber goods old rags and woolen scraps are sought but waste paper is not accepted due to overfilled mills.
Dr R R Shannon now First Lieutenant in the United States Army spent a few days in Milford early this week as he prepares to report to Fort McQuade California. He traveled with Mr Shannon and their two daughters Sheila and Dana and is slated for a permanent post as assistant to the surgeon. In Beaver County he had many friends after eight years in Milford and locals regret his departure but celebrate the recognition in the medical corps and the hope that service will bring good for many boys overseas.
Fitness leader Floyd Kotter reveals resignation as Milford High School coach after four years. He works at the Remington Arms plant and previously summered with Salt Lake City recreation. Mrs Kotter was a cafeteria cashier at the arms plant. Mr and Mrs William Ashworth and family visited Cedar City last Saturday.
Beaver County taxpayers face a county purpose tax cut of 20 percent for 1942, with the county levy set at 68 mills, down from 1.7 mills last year. The county roads welfare and library funding rely on this cavity levy, while the Milford Town and Beaver City school levies stay the same. Minersville Town rises to 20.5 mills. State levy remains 4.7 mills. total county and town levies total 27.0 mills.
California border quarantine report shows highway 66 traffic near 1941 levels while highway 01 drops 75 percent. Daggett reports 8,047 autos versus 11,832 last year and Yermo falls from 662 in July to 246 last month. Out of state traffic appears to bypass Kingman en route to Boulder City. Rubber and grain line rationing cited as main causes.
The local American Legion Auxiliary held an annual officer installation at the U S church on Tuesday evening April 11 with Mrs Naomi Hughes voting as installing officer. Those taking office for the ensuing year are Jers Smithson as president Edith Grimetan first vice president Christy Lyman second vice president Saami Huckes secretary Cal Waditoupe treasurer Ethel Nidoer historian Duuy Bistup chaplain and Mary Nichols sergeant at arms. After the meeting dainty dish ware served by the outgoing officers.
A letter from state controller Glen. Schramm praises Milford for its thorough civilian defense program. Sam Cline heads Beaver County Defense Council as W. E. B. Martin leads local efforts. The letter notes arm bands certificates and worker identifications and recommends Milford as a representative of small town groups in a Salt Lake City Municipal League meeting on September 31.
George Jefferson and J R Mur dock and local merchants along with Attorney Harold Cline spent the fore part of the week in Salt Lake City attending the Utah Retail Growers association convention.
Notice states primary elections on September 1 for Democratic and Republican candidates. Offices include Supreme Court Justice, U S Representative First District, State Senator Eighth District. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm at Beaver Armory and multiple Beaver Greenville Milford Minersville Adameville and Milford precinct locations. William A Miller bounty?
A list of election judges and constables for the upcoming primary and the registration agents in each district is provided. Milford districts, Mineraville, Greenville, Adamsville, Beaver districts 1 to 3 are named with the officers and registration agents responsible.
Branch Agricultural College near Ne Voyis announces start of the school year with registrations on September 21 and 22 and classes beginning September 23. The war era brings increased activity including army and navy officer training courses, with many returning students and new arrivals from California and nearby areas.
The Milford defense staff staged the second air raid drill with about 55 workers. Observers Sam Cling and S. M. Wittner praised the smooth response and organization. Certificates and arm bands were awarded to 28 trainees, as plans continue for further drills and inspections.

Beaver County agricultural committee urges farmers visiting the AAA office to inquire about the LMS wheat crop insurance plan. A three year contract covers 1949 1944 and 1941 crops, with potential for revised rates and yields. contracts can be canceled for new terms if better rates arise. The program aims to stabilize finances and reduce risk for growers amid war related shortages.
Trip to Huntaville with Ogden Mew and Mira BB Hewitt Javehter Edris Sunday. They visited Mr and Mrs Honey Ford parents of Mrs Hewitt, who celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. They traveled on No 24, left Ogden shortly before midnight, and spent the afternoon and evening in each others company.
