Draft Calls Stir Beaver County Mothers and Board Debates

Beaver County residents recall World War II days as draft calls go out monthly. White Pine Race Meet Expands at Ely with Extra Stalls

The White Pine Racing Association builds additional stalls at Ely as 134 stalls on the fairgrounds and 40 ranch stables are reserved for the meet starting August 19. Top horses Citations High Kisses Pays Echo Zions Pride Hi Don Hi Dee Dash On lead a four day program August 19 20 and 26 27 with eight races daily plus potential specials. Quarter horse races will run on the newly added straightaway.

Stewart Daughters Visit Harold Edwards Friends

Bonnie and Ramona Stewart of Pioche visited the Edwards children and Frances Walters. Frances returned to Pioche with the Stewarts and stayed until her parents moved to fetch her home. Mr. and Mrs. Walters also spent an evening in Ely.

Eight County Youths Answer Draft Call

Two Beaver County draft eligibles were scheduled to leave for Fort Douglas for physical examinations. Seven more will take exams on August 23, announced by Joseph A. Manziane, Beaver County Selective Service Board chairman. The county quota for August is eight inductees. Jaimes Thomas Jones of Beaumant and Phillip M. Gund of Milford were notified to leave for Fort Douglas.

Beaver County residents registered for selective service must report any changes in status such as marriage birth or other factors that could alter draft classification. The Beaver Utah board will meet at 10 am next Tuesday August 15 and requires complete details before then.

Patrolman Pearce Transferred to Salt Lake City

Ernest Pearce longtime Beaver County state highway patrolman leaves Sept 1 for a Granger district assignment in Salt Lake City to aid his family with college expenses. Born in Beaver he has served since 1940 and has nine children including two headed for the U of Utah this fall.

Seeding Drive Aims to Expand Utah Range Grazing

A coordinated grass reseeding campaign seeks to expand Utah range land grazing by up to 250000 cattle or 1500000 sheep. Demonstration plots will be set on public and private lands with involvement from state and federal agencies and Utah State College. A meeting of the Utah USDA Council is planned in the Governor's Boardroom on Friday Aug 11 to discuss further steps.

Milford Summer Recreation Program Ends This Week

Wallace Bennett and Preston L Jones are slated to address the Republican county nominating convention in Beaver next Tuesday evening.
