Public opinion toward drivers is the key to cutting traffic accidents. Drivers must be tested on motor laws and highway hazards, with stringent reexams for repeat offenders. Safety education must continue through newspapers, schools, churches, and civic groups to raise public opinion against careless driving and pedestrians.
Facing two weeks of closure due to funds shortage the Beaver County boards decision to reopen triggered Milford and Beaver teachers to volunteer two weeks of work without pay to ensure students can complete credits and graduates receive their certificates. Minersville high also reopened as educators donate time to support the term.
American Legion Auxiliary and the 4-H club host Better Homes Week at Milford Hotel showing an imported five room furnished model home. Tea served to guests, club demonstrations on breakfast service, closing day Friday, praise for Mrs. Ethel Nielson’s leadership.
Census figures show Beaver County granted only one divorce last year vs 12 in 1930, while marriages fell from 39 in 1930 to 34 in 1931. The trend echoes several years of declining nuptials, with Utah noting a state rise in 1981 and a small statewide increase in divorces in 1931.
Margaret Corn G T Fritzgerald married in Beaver last Saturday by William A Miller. The Milford native returned from California and ran the Milford Hotel during winter. Groom, a World War veteran and Union Pacific freight conductor, has lived in Milford since returning home. They plan to reside in Milford. Delta Chronicle notes Mr and Mrs C C Koch of Milford spent the weekend in Delta with daughters Lucile and Freda Koch. Freda to spend the summer there.
Telluride Power Company with 4891 customers shows operating revenues of 269000 a drop of 1600 from last year operating expenses 189000 and taxes totaling 23000. Net income stands at 9200 with 36000 in dividends paid from surplus.
The Mineral Products company south of Levan announced an order for over six carloads of fertilizer and calcite products from Miller Products of Portland Oregon. H D Goldsbrough vice president said shipment will occur as weather permits hauling to the railroad.
An audience of about two hundred attended Loris Hand's Sunday recital in the high school auditorium. The program opened with somber woods and memories, moved through Schubert songs, and included Negro spirituals. Ruth Fool accompanied, her fine interpretation enhancing the performance and hinting at Mr Hand's bright future in music.
The American Legion Auxiliary plans to sponsor another Back Yard Playground contest after strong results last spring. Members visit homes to gather participant names and improve Milford through this community effort.
An Western Air Express plane from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City landed at the local field last Thursday. Storm conditions forced the three passengers to hire an auto to continue to Salt Lake, while the two pilots returned to Los Angeles.
Miss Dorothy Murdock daughter of Mr and Mrs Jos R Murdock of this city will wed Samuel Bunkley of San Francisco next Saturday. The ceremony will occur in the California city where the bride has lived the past year. Mrs Murdock traveled to San Francisco to attend the wedding. Murdock, Milford girl, has worked in art since Westminster College and Bunkley is a Sanford University graduate and mechanical engineer.
Milford High plans graduation exercises for the class of 1931 32 to be held May 5 1932 in the high school auditorium with a commencement dance to follow in the gymnasium. Sixty two graduates listed include Charles Clements Kenneth Weston Edmund Smith Sherman Hickman Bob Murdock Lyle Goodwin Farrell Peterson Ellen Ford Ruth Pool Sarah Pool Leah Thompson Marjorie Thompson Merle Rollins Norma White Kathrine Munford Helen Kinney and others. The program features music by orchestra and string quartet salutations and an address to graduates by Supt Wittwer with a piano solo by Ruth Pool and a benediction by Bishop Bird. Class Day activities are set for May 4 at 2 o clock with vocal solos class history prognostication and performances by Sarah Pool Kenneth Weston Ellen Ford and others. A Milford resident Myles White and wife visited Delta over the weekend with their son.
A special Beaver County vote approved a $40,000 bond issue for the district. Four hundred two ballots were cast with a 116 vote margin in favor. Precinct by precinct tallies follow the summary.
The Milford Ward Primary will stage the Milford Seminary Spring Festival on Wednesday May 4 at 6 30 PM on the Union Pacific lawn under Mrs J H Grow with assistants handling dance costumes parade music and pageant. The parade forms at the L D S chapel and goes to the Union Pacific Depot lawn for the queen’s entry crowning and related dances and performances. The public is invited to attend.
The State Bank of Beaver County, defunct, mails forms for all depositors to file claims. Enclosures state the amount on deposit per bank records and request depositors to certify accuracy and return the form.
Miss Hutchins entertained Miss Hannora at her home last Thursday evening with bridge. Guests included Gladys Coleman Erma Fotheringham Edna Bunnell Mildred Killam Dorothy Leyi Margaret Williams Della Kirk and Jayne Sloan. Fotheringham won points Coleman honors and Killam guest prize. A delightful lunch was served.
In the Brig ham Young university track and field meet in Provo Beaver high school athletes claimed top all around honors. James Lindsay won the all around title with 5117 points, ahead of teammate George Anderson with 4829. Granite’s William Pendleton finished third, Springville’s Jack Cherrington fourth, and George Gourley rose from ninth to fifth by vaulting 11 feet 5 3 4 inches.
Ira L. Hyer foreman at Clyde Construction on highway 91 twelve miles south of Beaver stayed on the job two days with a broken leg. A H Cameron and J W Goulding Panguitch workmen were injured when two road trucks collided. Hyer developed an infection after arrival of Dr. McQuarrie and had the leg casted. Cameron improved and returned to camp. Goulding expected back soon.
Arthur Lightner of Minersville buys a thoroughbred stallion from Remount Breeding HQ at Fort Douglas. The horse will be shipped in a few weeks from Fort Robinson, Nebraska to Lightner.
