A reflective note cites a Boston editor on debt to the Pilgrim Fathers, joking about not paying it. It mocks claims of perfection and mentions a Nevada summer fever of personal crisis rumors among Indians sparked by a rumor whites would return land.
Milford News relayed legal guidance clarifying who may vote in bond elections. Only qualified electors who paid property tax in the preceding year may vote, with specifics on property ownership and tax payment requirements. Funeral services for George B. Fernley 48 were held at Milford L D S church after his death from heart trouble. Speakers praised his community service and kindly nature. Burial was in Beaver City cemetery. Fernley, born December 15 1882 in Beaver, lived in Beaver County most of his life and later managed the handwire department at Jefferson Mercantile in Milford. He is survived by his widow Mary Lang Fernley a daughter Teabell Renee Moxelle and a son George Fernley plus four brothers.
Planning Board convened April 12 in a westward Beaver church with Utah leaders and local citizens. Notable attendees included William Petarsen director of extension studies and W W Owens assistant agriculture director, Myrtle Davidson assistant home economics, T H Humpherys state engineer, G S Quate state coordinator sail conservation service, J Howard Maughn planning specialist U S ID A, and Dr C J Whantley extension.
The Ladies Literary group held a regular meeting at Exama Smith's home on April 13. Mae Peak gave an interesting review of the book Mozart. Attendees included Asenath Pool Mildred Gospill Ruth Williams Wayvie Peterson and Lucile Estes.
A late Monday night crash near Frisco left four sheep outfit workers injured and two more hospitalized. Jacks Talbot of Panguitch and Ralph Robinson of Circleville suffer broken and dislocated hips with cuts and bruises while Ned Dodds of Panguitah and Orlando Wrigley of Monroe escape with minor injuries. The driver was seized by authorities after prior drunken driving incidents and briefly regained the car, prompting renewed scrutiny of enforcement and past wrecks.
A Utah county planning session heard committee reports while state engineer T H Humphreys reviewed Beaver county reservoir site surveys. Lottie Kimball and Wilford Day attended with other officials. The page notes Beaver County's past prosperity from water abundance.
A Milford Home-Coming is planned for September 14 15 in connection with the Beaver County fair. The event aims to attract hundreds of former residents of western Beaver County now living across the United States plus many from southern Utah and eastern Nevada. Promoters hope at least two former residents per home attend, inviting families to prepare lists and contact addresses for invitations.
Milford high school hosted debates and speech contests on April 18 drawing Delta and Fillmore, with five rounds, ovations, and panel discussions. Winners advance to the state tournament in Salt Lake City. results include Stella Duncan leading girls oration and Delta winning panel, with a Milford girls debate team and Milford boys debate also noted.
Marvin E. Smith of Walmyra New York a former Milford News staff writer and second cousin of Mrs R W Acheson of Milford has been named editor of the Y News at Brigham Young University for 1989 40 A sophomore at the university notes the announcement by the publication committee
Proclamation designates Monday through Saturday May 1 to May 6 as spring cleanup days in Milford Utah. Citizens urged to clean premises and cooperate on vacant lots to improve the town’s appearance. Dated April 20 1989 signed by L A Wynaught, President, Milford Board of Trustees.
The health district laboratory in Cedar City will test Cedar City Elks members to determine blood groups for transfusions. Sponsored by the local B P O E, the program aims to create a ready donor group for life saving needs. Dr. A A Jenkins says similar services can aid other communities and organizations seeking known donor groups for transfusions. Milford high school won the team award in the first year bookkeeping contest at Brigham Young University Provo. The team included Theo Zabriskie Don Christensen and Hughes Williams with Marjorie Casterline as alternate. Don Christensen earned first place with a near perfect average. Over 500 students from Utah Idaho Wyoming Nevada and Arizona competed for scholarships medals plaques and certificates as part of the 15th Annual Intermountain contest with special entertainment for guests.
Mr Smith studies journalism and business administration at the university. This school year he serves as associate editor of the Y News and previously worked as a special writer and copy reader. He was business manager for the summer school Y and two staff members of the university News arena during the 1308 summer session.
The Legion Auxiliary held a very successful public card party Saturday night. Bridge was enjoyed with prize recipients Mrs. J. C. Jeffers Mrs. Gene Kirk and Mrs. M H S Pool winning the women's prizes and Ernest Uren George Jefferson and Frank Osborn taking the men's prizes.
A new shipment of Utah lake catfish, mostly mature and ready to spawn in five to six weeks, was planted at a Rocky Ford reservoir Wednesday noon. The move, part of state fish and game chief Newell B. Cook’s pledge to Milfora sportsmen, followed an April shipment of 2500 fish and aims to enhance early-season sport and the local ecosystem. The operation used tank trucks and included staffers Upton Cherrington, Henry Welcht, Murray Bohn, Bonnie county warden V. Williams, and local sportsmen observers from Beaver County.
